It is illegal to carry off of your property without a permit.
With a permit it does not have to be concealed but is a good tactical decision to do so.

A very important part of the training to get the permit is a good intro to TN regulations and self defense law in general. The gun safety and shooting stuff is a good idea too. I've been shooting handguns for decades and carried them and had to qualify every year in the military but I'm always glad to get a refresher and always open to learning something new. Well worth the cost to go through the permit process.

The laws have already changed in the 2 years since I got my permit. It might be worth your time to take a refresher class when you renew every 4 years, just to get caught up on the updates. You'll be surprised how many people will argue with you that you can't carry in a Tigermarket that sells beer. It's been that long since they took THEIR class. Imagine the laws that have changed since then....the enaction of the Castle Doctrine 2 years ago, most importantly.

Second question is NO. It does not have to concealed - but as others have said - if you don't want to have the discussion with the police every day about why your 'open carry' then concealed is the way to go.
