this pic was taken yesterday at stonewall wilson bridge before the second wave of storm at 26 feet and was dropping, now is at 34 feet.....dang....i think the bridge might be under water...no wonder why they stopped generating

Really sad. Can't seem to catch a break here lately.

The river temperature at Stonewall the first three days of May.

Corps plans releases from area dams
NASHVILLE, TENN. � The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is operating area dams along the Cumberland River and its tributaries to minimize flooding and reduce lake levels due to heavy rainfall throughout Tennessee and southern Kentucky.
Record high lake elevations are being recorded at dams such as J. Percy Priest in Nashville; Old Hickory in Hendersonville, Tenn.; and Cheatham in Ashland City, Tenn. �Some of these lakes are reaching capacity, and we have a plan to release water from these projects in order to lower those lakes to safe elevations,� explained Bob Sneed, Water Manager for the Nashville District.
�We recognize the impact of releases to communities along the already swollen creeks and rivers,� Sneed went on, �and we will try to balance risks to these communities with risks to those projects whose lakes are reaching capacity.�

�Our primary concern as always is public safety,� said Lt. Col. Anthony Mitchell, Commander of the Nashville District. �Our water managers and dam safety specialists are working around the clock to ensure that our projects are safe and that we minimize flooding wherever possible.�
�We are working closely with the National Weather Service,� said Sneed. Operation plans for area dams and lakes are provided to the National Weather Service (NWS), who maintains data regarding projected river elevations. Area residents with questions regarding projected river elevations should visit the National Weather Service website at http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/index.php?wfo=ohx

The following updates for area population centers are released by the Water Management Branch of the Nashville District.

Celina
� No issues with flooding at Celina.

Carthage
� Carthage is currently 6.06 feet above flood stage. The combination of no releases from Center Hill Dam and a series of flow reductions currently underway at Cordell Hull Dam should provide relief to the situation at Carthage.

Nashville
� Flood stage at Nashville is a stage of 40 ft. The NWS is forecasting that the Cumberland River will crest at 51.5 ft around 6:00 p.m. today, 11.5 feet above flood stage. At 12:30 p.m., the river elevation in Nashville was 51.35 feet. Flow reductions at Old Hickory scheduled for this afternoon (first cut was made at 1:00 p.m.) should result in flow reductions at Nashville. An increase in flow release from J. Percy Priest Dam is scheduled for tomorrow morning; however, it will be smaller in magnitude than the earlier Old Hickory releases resulting in an overall reduction in flow for Nashville.

Clarksville
� Clarksville is currently 14.78 feet above flood stage at 60.78 feet. The NWS forecast has a projected crest of 60.6 feet tomorrow. Flooding in Clarksville will persist for some time until the main river flows subside.

this pic was taken last year at bettys parking lot, after all day of heavy rain and with 29,000 cfs of generation. and it looked a little lower than this on sunday at bettys, the water was where the danger sign is. but at stonewall was different story.

I'm sure the Smith Fork put a lot of extra water into the Caney from Kirby (and Stonewall) on down. It drains an awfully big watershed.

That's what everyone is saying. I'm not entirely sure how it works out.

Water at 50+ feet in a reservoir like Center Hill is isolated enough from solar warming that it ought to cool some if the rest of the year is stable.

Last year we got into some trouble because we had another big rain in July that kept them running 'round the clock for a couple weeks. It was not long after that when the temps crept up into the low 70s, though they fell some later.

I'm not saying we'll have 45 degree water at the dam, but I'm keeping my hopes up that if we DON'T GET ANY MORE BIG RAINS, the lake will still stratify and we'll get water at least in the high 50s/low 60s down deep. The lower river will suffer but everything from Kirby up might survive.

I have no idea if I'm right. We're kind of in uncharted territory now.

A bigger problem will be nutrient loading in the water from all the runoff, which will massively deplete the oxygen in the first 6 to 10 miles of tailwater. We'll see if the sluice is up to the task of correcting that.

If we continue to get more rain and the inflowing water keeps things too stirred up to stratify, then we'll be looking at deep-water temps closer to the surface temps (well into the 70s) and the trout will be doomed regardless.

Luckily this rain has come at a time when the water near the surface is still relatively cold, rather than in the mid-summer when surface mixing would bring 80-degree water down into the depths.

We will have to wait and see whether my wishful thinking pans out. :)

No dead trout yet. Rainbows will hang in there right up into the mid 70s as long as there's enough oxygen, though they start showing signs of stress at that range. Catch and release a trout in 70 degree water and he may not go back well.

From 70 to 75 they start getting pretty stressed, and they start dying if it goes above 75 for any length of time.

All we can do is wait and see, but it is shaping up like it might be a really tough summer.

i think heavy generation will flush out the weak and keep the strong ones going, so there might be some benefit to this. only fishing hurt by heavy gen is people fishing for stockers and people trying to match the hatch,cuz there wont be no hatch for a long while,but again i dont fly fish so what do i know about hatches
 
If all the cold water flushes out and the water hits 75 degrees late this July, those "strong" fish you're talking about won't survive any better than the stockers.

i dont think it will hit 75 on the caney this year....was close to 70 last year though for about a couple days, but it is what it is, cant change mother nature nor tva/corps. last year there was over two months of consistant heavy water release, which i think it caused center hill to have a false turnover which made the water turn coffee color. so, when we see over two months of consistant heavy gen, then worry about cold water....just my uneducated guesstimate
