Cane Thickets?

I would be interested to hear what those of you who manage land and study deer think about cane thickets.

How much do deer use them? Do they use them as escape cover during the hunting season? Have you had success hunting them?

I'd be especially interested to hear from those who hunt around the Duck or Buffalo Rivers.

i have some cane on my property.it does have deer trails running thru it,i dont hunt it,use it as a sanctuary

There is plenty on it on the Buffalo where I hunt some. Never seen deer actually bed in it where it grows thick. Turkeys love it though.

I killed my largest buck ever as he was cruising the edge of a cane thicket. I have property in Putnam County close to the Caney Fork and we have tons of Cane. I've seen lots of beds in our cane.

I certainly wouldn't establish it on purpose. If you have it, use it. But I wouldn't establish it.

It is a pain in the rear. It is so thick in areas that a deer can't walk through it.

we had some in a club i was in. dont know what it was but it grew only in the bottoms and it never got tall or thick... I have seen many a deer walking through it nipping off the tops

I hunt a cane thicket at Chickasaw NWR. Killed two mature 8 pts working through it. Also when the bucks were chasing this year, the does would run through it to try and lose the bucks. Sometimes it would work for a little while and the bucks would crisscross through til they got the scent again.
