Hinted at this In the muzzleloader forum. We're camping muzzleloader opener weekend. Given moderate drought conditions in Middle TN, has me asking the question of a fire. Hopefully we get at least some rain tonight and temps will drop 10-15 degrees for the weekend. Negligible to 5 mph wind Friday and Saturday night. Have a good rock pit. Nothing roaring, work it down to coals. Drown it at bedtime. I'll have plenty of water. Like the company. Checked TN.gov and hickmancounty.gov and didn't see any open fire burn bans. What say you?

Currently, there are no burn bans in middle Tn. The main thing to remember is to extinguish the fire completely before leaving it. The leaf drop is causing fires to reignite after they are put out. I know of several debris burns that were out but with this heat and leaf drop the fires started again and crept away causing wildfires. If you have the fire pit bare dirt and make a dirt line around the outside of your pit you should be ok. Just keep an eye on it.

No burning ban. TDF is not issuing burn permits in most counties due to the dry conditions. Campfires are still allowed.

I do a fair bit of prescribed burning, and as a rule of thumb, if I have doubts, then I don't burn. If you do burn a campfire, then keep water on hand and completely extinguish it before you leave it. You can be cited and held liable for any damages your campfire does should it escape.

Buy a fire extingusher. We have two for our camp. Weather this dry we keep it low and in a fire barrel. If wind is blowing we don't have a fire outside when its this dry. Doesn't take but once.

We were burning brush piles pushed up out in the middle of a clean dirt field a few weeks ago. I was making a pass with the root rake and look over to see an old dead dry snag smoldering way over on the edge of the woods. Upon further inspection, apparently some embers carried aloft had traveled the 50-60 yards and stuck to the snag and it lit. Hopped down, grabbed a saw, felled the snag into the field, and quickly pushed it to the pile but dang...you wanna talk about dry?
I've burned a LOT and never seen that happen...it is DRY out there...lesson learned. If embers carried via wind can light a stick of standing wood, I'm keeping the dang matches in my pocket. Be extremely careful until your area gets some rain.

I cleared out a small area in a bush hogged field (wma campsite) a couple weeks ago. Just big enough for the fire with a couple feet of cushion around it. Nothing ever caught on fire except the wood I put on it. I didn't kill it before bed, but there wasn't much wind, and there was good dew cover at night.

That link is from 2012. I should have made myself clear. Montgomery county does not have a burn ban. City of Clarksville does have an open air burn ban. Other cities have bans but this is due to TDF not issuing permits for the cities. TDF issues to most all counties and have authority over burn bans. Counties have to get a burn ban declaration through TDF. Currently three counties have a burn ban and they are in east TN. Hope this clarifies things.
