Been meaning to ask this, but seeing pictures of deer sparring reminded me....

Do yall call/rattle at all? And if so, when do you start?

I'm more curious on rattling than calling.
Calling can get a lot of people in trouble since it's usually just something a hunter does when bored...
 
I call a lot of deer in every year. Also rattle. Most people don't sit still long enough after doing calls.

Rattling this time of year I have had success lightly rattling, acting like young bucks just " playing "

I have had deer come to calls and rattling 30 min. after doing it.

All 3 bucks i killed last year where called\rattled in, and many others that got a pass.
 
The trick to it is playing the wind and leaving a buffer between you and the field ( 30 yards inside the wood line with the wind blowing into the field ) so the buck feels " safe " enough to get down wind. Most of the time you can get a shot before he gets down wind. This works for me anyway. Just my .02
 
in the dog house said it best I to have a whole lot of success with it but you must be patient and don't expect for it to work all the time. but I really start calling big time starting around the last weekend til the first week of December.
 
This time of yr I don't do much, maybe lightly tickle some horns together. I carry the grunt call just in case I need to try to bring one closer. In nov and dec sometimes I'll rattle or do a few grunts every 20-30 min. Jus mix it up I don't ever rattle every 20 min, but I may rattle at daylight, then 20-30 min later hit the grunt tube, then 20-30 min rattle. I don't generally rattle after 8:00-8:30 am.. Or until the last hour of light...
 
I grunted a bachelor group in opening weekend....Antlers this time of year...don't get aggressive with it.....Light tickling to emulate young deer playing with each other is all you should use right now.

Reading this post was complicated to me... Like the sound and the fury in stream of conscious...

I don't call at all btw.
 
I lightly tickle the antlers together the first couple weeks of bow season. Brought in quite a few, though nothing to brag about
 
I don't to it a lot right now, but the best bow buck I ever killed, came on Oct 3rd by hammering the horns, making as much of a ruckus as I could.
 
i have called and tried rattling. never had any success with it . even when i could see the deer. most time i have had them look in my direction and just walk away / i grunted to a small buck this week just to see what he wold do . he turned a 180 and got gone quick not sure why maybe he thought he was going to get a butt kicking lol
 
i leave the call in the truck bc i know i'd mess it all up haha....i havent rattled yet this year, but im thinking about barely getting it going some. i know there are a few smaller bucks in the area, so i wouldn't sound too crazy if i tickled it some.
 
The absolute only call that I have ever had success was the doe in a can thing. I have tried grunting, rattling, honk the horn, talking to them, acting like Bigfoot. Ad nothing has ever worked. Except for the doe in a can. Killed two bucks and missed a good one with it.
 
I don't call or rattle (although I have had some success with it) because of the very limited visibility in the areas I hunt. Bucks, especially older ones, usually work downwind of whatever they hear before moving in for a closer look. They can easily do that on any of my hunting set-ups without me being able to see them first. Therefore, calling/rattling just gives me away far more often than it produces a positive response (buck actually coming in close enough for a shot).
 
I have personally had no success with rattling. I have had some success with grunting to a buck but only if he is in sight. I have never really had any luck with blind calling. That being said, I used to hunt mostly public land where there is a lot of pressure throughout the season. I believe that calling tends to work more efficiently on low pressured deer. That is just my opinion.
