Bushnell 4200 or Leupold VX-1?

Looking for a scope for my new smokeless H&R. I can get either one in 3-9x40 for roughly the same price ($200). Any suggestions?

I would go for the Bushnell. It's normally a much more expensive scope. You can get VX-I all day for that price. The only thing is that the 4200 has been discontinued. Also, I've read several bad reivews for that particular line of Leupold. I've never seen a bad review of a 4200.

I have a 4200 and really like it. the rain coating is worth it. Cabelas may be sold out but I bought another 3-9x40 4200 for $150 a few weeks ago.

For $175, there is not a scope made that will compare to a VX-2 3x9x40- Optically and warranty-wise.

I am not speaking of the Rifleman series, VX-I, or Vari-X models.

One can buy a slightly used VX-2 for $175 with a Lifetime Warranty.

An excellent buy for the money that the OP stated he wanted to spend. It CANNOT be beat for the money.

The Leupold model I suggested is a better deal by FAR. I have owned and shot both.

I now shoot with better scopes than either.

When we were young, we did what we could to get by. When we get older, we realize that the limited time we have pursuing our passion is not worth crap equipment- if we're smart.

Save your pennies. Buy once, cry once.

It's $199 right now. I think I saw it on there last week for $179 but I'm not for sure on that. I would definately jump on it for $150.

Go to bass pro and look through the leupold and bushnell models of your liking. I was intent on giving the 3200 a chance but to my eyes there was NO comparison on the vx1 vs the 3200. Left with the vx1.

3200 and 4200 can not hold a candle to Leupolds. I do tlike that the power adjustment is very easy to turn on them, but for clarity and light transmission, the Bushnell is not the best choice.

TNhunter, I did compare them in the store and it seemed like the 4200 was brighter. I looked through a 4200, VX-1 and a Nikon Buckmasters. The 4200 was heavier than the other two but seemed to be a little better scope. Still torn on the matter. I can get the 4200 for $195 otd or the Buckmasters or VX-1 for roughly the same money.

I would probably go with the VXII over the 4200 simply because Leupold's customer service is far superior to Bushnell's. Of the 3 mentioned (Buckmaster, VXI, and 4200), I would go with the 4200.

I think I'm gonna go with the 4200. I've spent way too long reading reviews and comparisons between the two and most of them put the 4200 up there with the VX-II and the Nikon Monarch. Plus the 4200 comes with a rain suit lol.

I can personally speak to Bushnell's customer service, and it is top notch. I sent them an older Simmons that most people wouldn't give $10 for, and they sent me back a brand new Bushnell Trophy XLT. The whole process took about 2 weeks.

The customer service manager also handled it personally. He gave me his direct contact info and answered my calls/emails within 24 hours.

I'm sure Leupold's customer service is just as good, but I don't see how it could be any better. The only down side for Bushnell is that they change models more often, so you may not get the exact same model you returned. For example, there is no 3200/4200 series anymore, just Elite. That's why you can get such a good deal on the 4200. Prices will go back up when the 4200 inventory is cleared out.

But you have to realize, Lefty Kreh can take half of one of his $150 TFO rods and can empty a flyline - 90ft. I can't do that with one of my nicer flyrods! It comes down to ability and what each of us sees inside a scope. I chose the Bushnells based on the Parallax which helps me to see. I could not focus my buddy's Luppy vx-1 3-9x without parralax.

I have VX1s, VX2s, and Vari-XIIIs. I've never had a problem out of any of them.

The VX2 is brighter though.

If you can take both outside and look through them it will tell you more. Inside a store you can't tell much.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. I have owned most every brand of scope there is. Including 5 different Bushy 4200's. Dollar for dollar Leupold beats them. The Bushnells have coatings that make the sight picture pop. This is what sucks people into thinking they are all that. Until you get into the 6500 series Bushnells the parralax is horrible.

I'll take the used Leupold over the brand new Bushnell everyday.

Had a friend that was given a Leupold that was found in a burned down house. It was charred black. He sent it back, and they sent him a new scope. That was probably 10 years ago. May not be as good now.

If you say it's because it looks clearer at the gun store you will lose any credibility. I will give the Minox the edge over the Bushy 4200. It well should since it costs twice as much.

You can buy the MINOX ZA3 3-9 from Cameralandny.com for that price. You have to tell them you want the Holiday Special. It's a special for forum members on other hunting/outdoor forums. How do I know the MINOX outperforms the VX3 is simple, I own 2 MINOX scopes and have compared them to a VX3. The MINOX has a significant edge in contrast with dark colors, is clearer, has better resolution, and is brighter at low light. The glass is from Schott, the same glass that Zeiss uses. In the VX3, you don't know where the glass is from. In low light, colors aren't as vibrant as the MINOX. Its reticle is also etched and doesn't change colors like the VX3. Also, the eye relief doesn't change as you increase the power like the VX3 does. Optically the MINOX is equal to if not better than the Zeiss Conquest.
