What makes things so different this year?

During juvy last year.

Now this year,yesterday,I found the first rub on something besides a sapling.Also a small scrape on the edge of a plot.

Heres the real weird one,Ive been keeping a mock scrape"fresh" since the bow season opened,yesterday I find a real scrape not 10 yards from the mock scrape.Thought that was kind of weird.

No decent looking bucks on camera since August,I keep telling myself there is a patch of Whiteoaks somewhere that is producing,but why arent the 10 million does I see each trip there too?

How much deer hunting success and buck sign can fluctuate from year to year never ceases to amaze me. But one thing I've learned from watcing individual properties for years is not to get too worried about a single year's event. Sometimes crazy things happen that can't be explained.

In addition, hunting success (deer/bucks seen and killed), as well as buck sign, can display wild variations that are NOT linked to actual deer population. In essence, you may have the same number of deer and the same age structure from one year to the next, but hunting success and buck sign can be polar opposites between those years. Great hunting success doesn't mean you have more deer, and terrible hunting success doesn't mean you have less deer.

But all of this is why I prefer to analyze data on three-year running means instead of looking only at annual data. The running means smooth out the wild year to year fluctuations.


So far this MZ season, our deer, buck and older buck sighting rates have been the highest we've experienced in 6 years, yet our local deer population is at a 6-year low. Go figure...
 
yeah,its frustrating,especially watching doe,after relaxed doe.No sign of any rut what so ever.Guess this is an example of,"if you have the does,the bucks will come running." Not being true.

Seems like the bucks will have to show up sometime,hate for all those does not to get bred.
 
Also a hopeful ques BSK,does the new "real" scrape,only ten yards from the "mock" scrape mean a new,MONSTER :) mature buck is showing his dominance by putting the scrape so close,or just happen satance?

They will get bred, but you probably won't see much of it (all at night due to a locally skewed sex ratio).

Doubtful. I don't think it means anything in particular.
 
Bsk, i am no biologist but love the wonder of it all. I have not found so many rubs and scrapes since the 2002 season when and while at Eagle Creek i found them everywhere i went.
My findings this year include this.
the juvy weekend kicked off the intense but albeit young buck rubbing and scraping episodes with many being just a dinner plate in size but found them everywhere i scouted.
Then the opening weekend of MZ the big boys were starting to get involved and the tree sizes started being as large as my forearms and larger. i found community scrapes in two areas and blew a chance at a large buck last tues morn cause i spent a few extra seconds trying to size up the antlers and let him get away in the process. At laurel hill this past weekend on the three day hunt i again found great rubs and scraping everywhere. this is one awesome year for both in Lawrence and Wayne counties in my findings. I think perhaps it coincides with the heavy mast which by the way we still have Red Oaks with Acorns on them an i used my binos to watch and locate them and the squirrels are still pulling them off the tree tops here in this late November both on our lease and on Laurel Hill in Lawrence county. I havent seen any serious buck movement on the big boys yet but i suspect it is coming soon. However i notice the temps are not getting colder but really a little mild in the next week compared to this past week when Mz opened.....Wonder if that will slow the process or what. I think we are at least 1.5 weeks from serious chasing IMO.....but that doesnt hold much. Cant wait to see it get a little closer.
