I have been hunting with my savage 270 for three years now using the 150 gn federal soft points. I have killed 4 deer and they all have looked like the one below. This was the first deer I shot with it and was confused for about 10 min but I am absolutely positive that this is the entrance and there was no exit. As you see I have not had to track one with this round yet. Thoughts?

That's why I'm bringing it up Now that I'm reloading I was contiplating changing. To me being ignorant this looks like a great round but I have read you guys talk about a bullet coming apart too soon not being a good thing. Can you go into detail? My mind is telling me a hole big enough for innerds to fall out of means not a lot of tracking. Have I just been lucky?

That hole would be great if it was an exit wound. An entry wound that big means the bullet is expanding or exploding to early on and may not get the penetration needed to hit vital organs. Ideally, the bullet expands in a "controlled" manner so that it gets maximum penetration and blows through vital organs.

since you are reloading for the 270 there is no reason you cant load a premium bullet

shooters pro shop sells factory over runs and blems


see other thread i have listed several good bullets 277

if you want a good cheap bullet 140 gn hndy btsp interlock (not sst)

if it was me i really like 140 and 130 accubond

cant go wrong with partition or the new e tip

i have not used barnes in 277 have no doubt they will work good bout the same as the etip
 
Here is entrance wound for a 3000 FPS 150 grain .308 Nosler Accubond at about IIRC 120 yards or so. The buck ran about 30 yards. Zoom in on the POI.
 
That is really unexpected to see such excessive expansion in a "heavy for caliber" bullet like that. Especially when shooting a deer. I've only shot one deer with my 270 - I think - and I used a 130 gr Nosler Partition with good results, i.e. 1 inch exit hole with a classic "behind-the-shoulder" broadside hit at about 100 yards. I do recall another with the same bullet and it was a head on chest shot that didn't exit, but I would hardly expect it to with a shot from that angle. It did give full penetration of the chest cavity. My load only chronographs around 2880fps though, so is somewhat less likely to fragment bullets compared to a full out 270 load.

I was honestly confused when I realized that this was the side facing me when I shot. I couldn't and still have a hard time believing a bullet can do damage like that at poi. How can it possibly come apart that soon? Thanks guys I believe I understand now why that's a bad thing...if I were to shoot into the shoulder the bullet is in pieces by the time it makes it to the bone therefore not enough weight left to drive it through bone into the vitals? Is this correct?

aka brandon see if he still has pics of deer he killed with a 280 rem 28"bbl pro hunter something from t/c

he used superformance hndy sst dont remember the weight i want to say 140

i hate the sst bullet in rifles but with that long bbl and the hot load ammo lets just say his results were the same actually worse

some times i lean dont try to figure it out it is what it is learn and move on

i dont care what brand you use speer sierra hndy NOSLER barnes
you will have better results with a better bullet
 
Entrance wound from 150 gr Winchester ballistic silvertip 3300 fps from 24" barrel model 70 .300 wsm
Never had an entrance blow up like that before. Seen some exits open up a lot but nothing this bad.

After he got up About 50 yards.
Still breathing when I got to him.
Rolled him over and he expired.
I was shocked that he ran at all when I saw the hole.

I've been shooting the Winchester .270 130gr power bonded rapid expansion bullets and they've dropped everything in their tracks . A normal hole in and a silver dollar or a little bigger hole out. The bullet design reminds me of the Barnes muzzleloader hollow point bullets. Basically it's a .270 hollow point bullet , been very pleased with them .
 
Seems I've only had two rounds where the deer didn't run on me. The most frequently used was .357 in 158 gr jsp - but used within range from a lever gun. The other was 55gr 22-250 (head shots). My others are 30-30 which they sometimes run a little, and surprising to me, it seems they have run the furthest when hit with my .50 cal muzzle loader.
