Just bought a CVA Kodiak 50cal. Haven't had one in a while. What would be a good bullet for hunting deer?
 
welcome to the site,try a 295g power belt with 130g of pellets,it drops them in their tracks,it kicks but all rifles like diffrent loads,so you may start out with 100g & work up or you may be good with 100g,my hunterbolt is a tack driver with 130g with the 295g bullets.ck your manuel & see what the max charge/bullet weight is.the hunterbolt is no more than a 300g bullet with 150g of powder,mike243
 
Thanks Deer Assassin. I think I'll start with the 300gr hndt. I have not so good things about the powerbelt bullets. Not staying on the powder. Have you had this problem with the 405 lead?
 
Try a few differant combinations and find one that works in your gun and your needs. I use the PB's because I can't get a second bullet to load without cleanning my gun. I shoot the lighter ones in my 45 for a little more distance. I may shoot up to 200 yards and the heavier bullets had too much drop. I don't always get pass throughs, but place a shot in the heart/lung and the deer is down. I shoot 3" mags in my slug gun and don't get pass throughs, but with good shot placement they take the deer out.
 
yeah just try different loads. the 300gr Hornady SST is a good bullet and is what i currently shoot. 90gr of 777 and 300gr SST is my muzzleloaders "poison".

My CVA Optima like the PB 324 gr. I think. Its the yellow one, 300gr. something.
With 100 777

I tried 245gr.SST Hornady with Pirodex, and they were all over the place.
Then I switched it all, powder, bullets and went heavier, thanks to DA advise.
CLeaned between every shot, and I mean EVERY SHOT. Spent alot of time at the range that day but I could cut holes at 100 yards with 3 shots.
Every gun is differnt. what works in mine, yours might not be able to get it on paper. So take your time and take alot of targets. I don't think anything over 100 gr. is unnessary if you have flames coming out of your barrle.

Thanks DEER ASSASSIN. I think that is where I will start. That bullet and 100grs.How does the 405 Powerbelt shoot at over a 100yds?
 
I'd have to agree with D'Assassin, "A rock will kill a deer
pop't out a ML"...I bought a new 45 cal. CVA last year...I
wanted to shoot cheap and alot...I went with a 250 grain bullet
mold from Dixie gun works, settled on 80 grains of loose 777,
and That bullet lube called "Bore Butter" from TC"..I killed a
pile of deer, a bobcat and some squirrels with it and aint had
it a year yet...& using iron sights..It shoots clean and
accurately to 70 yrds..where I hunt, thats as far as you can see
in the woods...I bought a bunch of 777 on clearance at Walmart..
secured a lifetime supply of lead...I'm happy.............BH51..
 
For what it's worth, I have a CVA Kodiak and couldn't get the PB bullets to hold a desireable pattern. I toyed around with some cheapO Knight 260 gr lead no jacket projectiles and Pyro @ 90gr and it shot fine. That's just MY personal experience from the same ML, like I said, for what it's worth.

Here is what I am going to start with.
Hornady 300gr. SST/with black sabot
100gr. 777 pellets
Haven't shot it yet will let you know how it goes.
 
The Hornady sabot less mentioned on here by someone is what i think/hope to be the new revolution in bullets for MZdrs....Cant wait to use them is some serious testing soon......

Like others have said, the combo that works for my rifle won't even hit inside the target on yours. I had a similar situation using Hornady XTPs (or something like that) in my .45 caliber. The target looked like a blindfolded 10 yr old kid shot it. :D I switched to Powerbelts and my accuracy improved dramatically. Powerbelts will kill deer, but don't expect a blood trail.

I am still looking for the combo for my .50 cal rifle. As of now, it's 245 gr (I think, can't remember) Knight Spitfires, that's made by Barnes. I shot a deer with it, and it left a great blood trail.

So get a few different bullets and spend a day at the range. Either way, it's good practice.
