I am currnrly recoveromg from heart bypass surgery and am worried about hunting with my .270 this fall. It is a very light rfle amd kicks very hard . A number of people have suggested i should hunt with a .223. My son-in-law happens to own one and I was wondering which bullet to use for deer.
 
I loaded some 53gr. Barnes TSX bullets for my son, shot a doe with one last year, the wound channel was unbelievable for a bullet that small. Complete pass-through, took 4 steps toppled over. The only other bullet I have experience with in .223 for deer is the Nosler Partition it will hold up, but I can't get it to stabilize in my 1:12 twist.
 
60gr Partions work really well... Firends duaghter shot a buck this year that was standing about 80 yards away looking at her. Deer dropped in it tracks.
 
I used 60gr. Hornady V-Max this year, and dropped both deer in their tracks, one was a complete pass thru this deer was around 80yards, the other I found in his opposite shoulder and this one was right at 200yards.

Yes, the 60 grain nosler partition is the medicine. They stabilize in my 1/14 twist 22-250

I love this site eben though you have to check it every day!!! Bargains come and go very quickly. For example, right now they have Nosler Accubonds, 30 cal, 168 grain, 15.95 for 50. I picked up quite a few bargains just recently, including 60 grain partitions at 19.00 bucks for 50.

The winchester 64grain powerpoints work well.I've only shot 1 deer with them,but it sure did its job.And i've only heard good things about them.I have half a box your welcome to have if we can find a way to get them to you.
 
A 223 will kill a deer fine, but have you thought about the reduced recoil loads made for a 270 and the recoil pad mentioned above? The reduced recoil loads I've used in my '06 when my sister was going to use it on a deer hunt was quite a lot tamer than the usual 165-180 gr loads I shoot. The grouping of the full house and the reduced loads were also very close to one another.

Just a thought.
 
53gn Hornady V-Max or the 65gn Sierra Gameking. Both are great bullets and both will drop a deer out to 200+yds.

7/08 with a reduced load 2700 fps 120 gn bullet

i guarentee u is the ticket

it is my "youth load"

my son has killed several

i have out to 279 yds big 200 lb buck

and ac hunter has went to this load because of 2 neck surgeries

how ever

i do like 60 partitions
 
Dont underestimate the factory loaded 55 gr. Remington cor-lokts i have had very good luck with those and they have plenty of kill power
