Bullet and Patch Lube

Anybody on here make their own bullet and/or patch lube? I've been using the chain store products for years and never given it much consideration until now. I have inline's that shoot sabots real well, but I also have a 1980's TC 50 caliber Renegade that I plan on hopefully getting dialed in for hunting with some Hornady Great Plains bullets along with some patched round balls. Soooo, what's your recipes?

In recent years I've just used the yellow colored stuff that comes in a squeeze tube on TC Maxi balls. Back when I used patched round balls in a Flintlock I needed something to be correct for the colonial time period. Something that I could carry in a tin. I made something from 50% beeswax and 50% neatsfoot oil compound. That is not pure neatsfoot oil rather some compounded for waterproofing shoes, (moccasins), and I bought it from Tandy Leather. It carried nicely in a tin and at normal temperatures it was solid, did not turn into liquid and run out. Greased patches really good too.

I was just fixing to mention 100% neats foot oil. I bought mine at Tractor Supply. The club I'm in usually has 25 shot woods walk matches and I've found that my .58 caliber flintlock loads just as easy on the 25th shot as it does on the 1st. This of course is with a patched .570.
As far as bullet lube, I've used something as plain as olive oil and beeswax with good results.

For range use, spit is ok but any of the other water based solutions will be fine....ballistol, dawn dish washing liquid, simple green, etc mix will all work. Of late, I use a commercial one by the name of Mr Flintlock patch lube. I really like it.

What is your ratio of beeswax and olive oil?

Generally equal parts. If it's too stiff for your needs, then back off a little on the beeswax. how are you going to lube your bullets? Larry Potterfield with Midway has a good video on pan lubing.

That seems easy enough. I actually thought about pouring some melted lube in an empty chaps stick tube with a few extra unlubed bullets and of course have some prelubed bullets ready to go instead of lubing them all at once. I thought tis may keep the lube from drying out from one year to the next.

I guess if you're shooting a lot the pan lube method may be the way to go. Your idea sounds good too.

I'm not a "bullet " shooter so I can't help you there…
As far as patch lube, there's more concoctions out there than you can shake a stick at…
Some work as advertised, some don't.

In my personal experience , a lot depends on the type shooting you're doing …
Hunting or target shooting , 1 shot vs 25.
Weather & humidity levels are part of the equation as well.
Some lubes just don't do well in cold weather and others don't do well in the heat.

Like Wobblyshot said, shooting 25 times a day a Man don't want too have to stop a work on your gun every time the next target comes available.

I have used several different lubes or homemade concoctions over the years and have finally settled on 1-cup Murphy Oil Soap, 1- cup of Mr. Clean .(green)
Pour thie two items in a 64 oz bottle and top off with the cheap blue windshield washer fluid.

I then transfer it into a smaller container in my cleaning kit.

It makes a green concoction that cuts powder residue as good as anything if tried.

I use it for both shooting patch lube and cleaning solution.
My patches are pre dampened and kept in a small container in my pack or bag.

So basically I'm wiping my bore with the patch as I load each shot.

For hunting when my gun might be loaded for days, I use EVOO.
With a pinch of wasp nest between the patch & powder.

Here's a couple items I've used over the years including good ole spit..and Bear grease.
All of which worked well.

Lots of choices out there, just find what works best for your situation.
