Just depends on the quality of parts and if you wait for sales to buy them.... or maybe shop around for the best prices.

What are you specifically looking at trying to compare to?

That is the key. You can assembly one for around $700 or $3700 - all depends on what you want!

For me - I would just purchase a fully assemblied name brand AR-15, unless I was going to put high quality parts into it.

Good luck - black rifles are additive.

If you are going to build I would recommend Palmetto State Armory. You can build one for around $750.

With a $1200 budget I would buy a Colt.

I've built several for under $600... but then again, I'm cheap.

Like someone else said, it really depends on what you want to spend - you can go as high as you want or can afford.

I have a 300BLK upper that should show up at my office today. It was $460 shipped, I will put it on a complete polymer lower I had ($120), a $10 magazine, and I will be in business for under $600 - not including an optic.

I built another one last year, another polymer lower for $120, $370 shipped for a complete 5.56 16" upper with BCG and charging handle, threw a $39 holo sight on it, and I'm shooting that one for under $550 - optic and a fully loaded 30 round magazine included.

That's pretty much the bottom of the price point - you can adjust up from there... WAY up.

Yep, it all depends on what you want to do. I've put together quality rifles inexpensively. I've also seen folks put them together and spend more than they could have bought an identical rifle for.

Last week I built a couple for my daughters. Two polymer lowers $240, two Chiappa .22lr uppers $580, two cheap red dots $60. Total of $880 for the two of them. I know they're just .22lr, but all they have to do is swap uppers and ready to go.

PSA runs specials on uppers frequently. I just ordered a mid-length from them last week for $269.

how do you like the polymer lowers? I have heard alot of bad reviews on them. Any specific brand? Frontier?

The last two I got are Omni lowers. They seem OK, but I haven't done anything but put the uppers on them. I have a Plum Crazy lower I got a couple years ago and put a PSA m4 upper on it. I've probably run 800 to 1000 rounds of .223 from Wolf 55gr to Lake City m855 through it with no problems.

Before I bought the Plum Crazy I did some internet research, mostly on arfcom. I noticed the people who talked bad about them had never owned one. Most everyone who actually owned one was very happy with them. One guy put a .50bmg upper on one to torture test it. I don't remember the exact number of rounds he said, something like 60 or 70, but it did crack where the buffer tube attaches. He said he called the manufacturer, told them what happened, sent it back, and they sent him a new one in about a week.
