Building an AR????

Okay, I have been wanting an AR for awhile. I have read its cheaper to build a rifle than just buy one and you actually end up with a better rifle in the long run. I have no experience at all with this, so what kind of advice do you guys have? Parts to buy, where to buy? I appreciate it.

You can get a Del-ton at a great price, which would be less than building one. That is unless you want to go totally custom.

If you have never built an AR there is a few places you need to be careful on. The little ears that hold the trigger guard on are real easy to break off if not supported. A lot of little springs and detents will go flying also.

Read up on building one and if you are a little mechanically inclined You should be OK. But I don't think you will save enough over buying a factory rifle to be that big of a difference.

Well there is no doubt that I could do it to be honest with you. Im am by no means a gunsmith but I am mechanically inclined by all means. I actually shot a DPMS yesterday, and to be honest with you, I loved it. I have not shot any other AR so I dont know the difference. All I know is, I have the bug..LOL.

Just order a complete rifle, and have it sent to your FFL.

Rifles are right under rifle kits. ;)

I prefer to build my own when it comes to AR's most people can't leave an AR alone, they buy an over the counter AR just to wait a little while then add a different stock, quadrail,sights,trigger, or whatever. When you look at the cost of the rifle plus the cost of the extras to me its better if you build exactly what YOU want, so you can spend the money where it matters most qaulity barrel and bolt carrier group and so on.

If you just want one to shoot and leave it alone just go over the counter but with the AR being so easily modified they are hard to leave alone.

I really just like the idea of actually building my own. You put your work into it and it makes things a little different. Kind of like growing you own food..LOL. There is so many things that I like and dont like about the ones you just buy over the counter.

As long as you use quality parts you'll have a quailty gun,use cheap parts and have a cheap gun (with no warranty).Easy to do as long as you have the tools.I've got my eye on one right now and will probably go ahead and order it from Gunbrokers next week since I can only find 1 dealer in middle tennessee that carry them and it's a tad overpriced in my opinion.Just remember it's a disease,you get one and for some reason they seem to multiply.

You opened up the flood gates when you asked for opinions on AR parts. Which is like rearends everybody has one. Find a deal on and upper and lower assembly. You can change out and modify as go along. Just figure what configuration you want to start with- carbine, rifle, heavy varmit or target and go for it.
