Buckwheat pics

I am pretty darn satisifed with how buckwheat came up in my newly made fields. As soon as the dozer was out of there, I sowed my seed right before a rain and it came along well without any fertilizer or lime. Here is 1/2 of one of my plots, I couldnt get the whole thing in a pic due to the lay of the land.

Heres a plot I had put in way up on my ridge

Apparently it grows well in the shade too, I planted this in a place where the dozer made a Y intersection for a road.

A 3 pronger ginseng plant thrown in for good measure LoL

Buckwheat can grow on a rock. I love the stuff for a variety of uses. Deer love it, turkey love it, and it makes a great dove field. It'll also keep deer off the main crop in our fall food plots. It lives just long enough to give the deer something to eat until the other stuff comes up.

CWT, I havent noticed any serious browse pressure. A few tracks here and there but they arent hitting it very heavily at all.

Could be that there is tons of good natural browes right now.
Succulent plants full of protien, are abundant right now, after
the recent rains. I'm sure buckwheat is good, but there ain't no
substitute for good natural browes. Deer have a natural instinct
for what their bodies need.

Hate to disagree with ya Hook but Ive dug alot of the stuff for selling it and that is ginseng lol The two back leaves and flower like thing in the middle give it away lol Virginia Creeper is a woody vine that will have a woody stem down at the base. and no flower in the middle. You can pick them apart from many yards once you develop the eye for it.

Looks like it did well. Yep thats a 3 pronger ginsang plant. I had been wondering if anyone else on here hunted ginsang. It gets about as addicting as deer hunting to me.

Mathews Hunter, Yes winter wheat, oats, and Ill do at least half of my total acreage in perennial and annual clovers to have something there year round.

Hillbilly Hunter, they do look alot alike this time of year but you can get to where you recognize it very easily this time of year. That is definitely ginsang in the picture. Once you have seen alot of it, it is plain as day.

steven,.. the first time i planted buckwheat i was dissapointed at first. Browse was very low. But, after it starting maturing the browse really picked up alot. When i established my second crop of it ,. they hammered it. During the fall i mixed it in with my fall/winter annuals. they tore it up and let my anuals establish.

My point is,. for some reason for some folks you might have to plant it a couple times before the deer realize its good. BUT,. after they do realize its good ,.. its like candy to them.
Thats a nice stand for no lime and fertilizer,.. congrats. And good luck in those plots.

Remember not all ginseng is as dark green as the plant in hillbillys picture, and of course it doesnt have berries until late summer/early fall. Ginseng hunting is getting to be a lost sport I suppose.
