Bucks Rubbing While in Velvet?

Found a fresh rub today. Do bucks rub also while in velvet? I thought they only started to rub closer to when they shed their velvet.

I would agree as the damage goes all the way to the ground and neither the foliage nor the dirt is disturbed around the base of the tree. Just my .02.

If that's a buck rub it's from last year. I just don't see where a buck in full velvet with more growing time ahead would do any rubbing like that.

Something is tearing the bark off this tree

Antlers should still be full of blood and fairly tender right now. I can't see a deer doing this right now. To do that much damage would surely hurt and I would imagine there would be plenty of blood and velvet strips on the tree.

Never heard of it.............on pet bucks in velvet, they will not let you hold onto their antlers in velvet............very protective of them.

Some cedar trees die this way, I don't know if it's a disease or what, but the bark peels off exactly like the one in the pic. I've seen it a bunch of times and I'm surprised someone hasn't said it yet.

Good call Catman. I inspected the tree today and it is definitely diseased and there are more spots peeling off further up the tree.

My thoughts as well. I've seen sevyer cedar trees do this. I usually think they're a big rub from a distance but disappointed when getting closer.

It's possible it's a dying cedar and a bobcat is scratching it up. I've got pics of a bobcat in the area.
