Bucks grunting?

Yesterday I shot a pretty good buck that was following a doe. I thought I had spooked her because I heard her blow and then saw her jump across the trail I was on. Right after that I heard a grunt from where she came. I saw the buck in the brush and then he went out of sight and grunted again. I shot him as he tried to cross the trail where she did. My question is do bucks grunt at people or was he more than likely grunting at the doe. He didn't seem to be concerned with me or even know I was there - about 30-yards away.

When they got one in their cross hairs but she's not 100% ready he runs while annoying her. Gruting constantly. If it looks like she trying everything to get away from him then she's not to intrested but if she's staying pretty close (50yrd) then he's saying "hurry" to her. Man humans and deer are so alike hookin up. Its crazy. If im wantin a piece and she's running around procrastinating I find myself naggin her to get her butt in gear.

I had this old doe just about bust me the morning before gun opener. She had a young doe or a fawn with her at all times, and she had picked me out, but wasn't quite sure of what I was. She was about to bust me or just leave the area when this buck came in and grunted, sniffing his way toward the does. I managed to get my bow drawn but he took off chasing them, he never had a clue I was there. A little while later the same old doe and young doe were out of bow range because they had just busted me again, and blew at me, when that buck came back out of nowhere and chased them off for a second time.

Nobody really knows what a buck is communicating by grunting as he follows a doe, but it is an integral part of the breeding ritual.
