Bucks dropping already

Just a heads up to anyone planning any late season doe hunting- I went out this evening and saw 2 different yearling bucks that had already dropped one or both sides. Both were by themselves and displayed the typical yearling buck recklessness, completely oblivious to my approach. If you are trying to lay off the little ones, look twice or 3 times before the safety comes off.

By the way, deer were stirring early today with the low gray skies. I saw deer immediately upon arriving and on the way to the stand, and took a nice yearling doe for a guy at work at about 3 pm.

Funny how different things are in really not that big of distance. Most buck here have a solid 2 months before they even think about dropping. Common to see bucks still carrying both sides in the start of turkey season.

We'll still have several older deer that will hold them into April, and the older bucks are still holding their antlers according to trail cam pics. Those little guys will fool you, though, as they are built about like a doe anyways. This was is Jackson county, but I've found fresh sheds before New Years in Hickman county as well.

Likely some health issues if the majority of your bucks dropping this early. 90% here wont drop before mid March. If only a couple may be no big deal however.

I heard one of the Ames hunters shot an 8 pointer this past week and on his death run he dropped one side. When the hunter got to him and started his drag the other side came off. They said his hooves were sluffing off which indicates an earlier bout with EHD.

I have seen deer in Middle Tennessee that have dropped one of both sides before Christmas. More than once. I really don't think there is a reason other than it just happens. I was after a great buck I had seen on Priest a few years ago and almost shot what I thought was a huge doe, decided to wait to see if anything was with "her", and the deer walked under me and had just dropped his antlers, full week before Christmas, went back and looked and looked for the antlers, never found them.
