Buck rut

I was just reading an article in RACK mag. A hunter who had taken a monster buck stated in his story that he knew this buck would'nt rut so he would stay local. Later discovery was the buck had suffered testicular damage, only had one and it was undersized. But he didnt know that until after he killed it. My question is why wouldnt a buck rut? This buck had never shed the rack from thr previous year, is this the reason? Ive seen wounded bucks, injured bucks and half dead bucks givin it thier all during the rut, How'd he know this one would'nt?
 
"Cactus rack" bucks (bucks that never shed their velvet) are usually incapable of breeding. They have a cactus rack because their body cannot produce enough testosterone to harden the antlers and kill the velvet. It only takes a little bit of testosterone to start the antler growth process, but a significant surge to harden the antlers. Low testosterone (usually caused by testicular damage or testicular underdevelopment) usually means no breeding.
 
That said, assuming that ANY buck will successfully reproduce in any given year is a bit questionable. In very detailed long-term DNA studies from large properties, where a very large number of fawns are captured each year and DNA tested to see who their parents are, it has been noted that many bucks do not successfully produce a fawn in any given year. And some bucks never produce a fawn in their entire lifetimes.

LOL I had that problem once when I tried to type in DicksSportingGoods.com. Def don't want to forget the sporting goods part, not quite the same
