I need some advice. I found several buck tracks measuring about 7 inches in length coming from a pine thicket and crossing a dirt road (always going in same direction). I'm assuming he's a mature buck simply based on how big it is. Anyway, I have a picture last year from a trail cam of a big 3.5-4.5 year old in that area. I'm hoping this is the same buck. I'm thinking that the pine thicket may be his bedding area. The pine thicket begins on a flat road and goes up about 600 ft with hardwoods being on other side. About halfway up the pines we planted a food plot about 20x40. What is the best thing I can do in this situation when hunting a mature buck? If it is his bedding area, I am hesitant to hunt the food plot. I do have scentlok clothing, but still I don't want to push him out. I have looked around the hardwoods for sign but have been unsuccessful in finding any. By the way, the other side of the road has been clear cut, and is basically wide open. This leads me to believe that he is crossing during night. I simply want to learn, so any advice is appreciated. By the way, I am happy to answer more detailed questions about the setup.
 
If you have does hitting the food plot, just simply set up down wind of the thicket. He will show himself eventually. Just be patient. And take the long way around to your set up, steer clear of the thicket if possible.
 
Seven inches from the front edge to the back edge of a single hoof? Is this on sloping ground, or was the deer running? Are you including the dew claws in that length?

If not, I think you are looking at an elk track or something, not a whitetail. I don't think any elk have made it down this way, though.
 
Flat ground, appeared to be walking. Measurement was from dew claws to front.

Find the terrain features that would tend to funnel that deer in and out of the pine ticket in relationship to your food plot. If the plot is drawing the does they in turn will draw the buck out. I'd concentrate on likely edges the buck might travel while scent checking for possible estrous does and I'd be very careful of his possible travel routes in relationship to the wind direction.
