My neighbor recently told me that last summer,09,they found numerous,30 or so dead deer on his 285 acres.You hear anything about deer loss last year in NE Perry co.? I didnt.I had deer all over me,wondering if he got his summers mixed up.
 
Nope. That would be the first I've heard of EHD in northern Perry County last year, and I have a bunch of clients in that area.

Same here!

But we all know in the end, mother nature knows whats best and its better for the herd. It's so frustrating though :)
 
I got rocked by the ehd in willamson but the one postive thing i can say is last year was the first year in 15 years of having this property that i had 3 bucks on my own little 40 acres that were 145" plus...so mother nature knows what she is doing. less deer means more top notch food for the strong that survived and leaves nothing but the best strongest genetics to pass on. There was just getting to be way to many does even though i take 15 or so a year. Still in the late season last year i had 15 to 20 does coming in every evening on my plot.

Over the last two years, I noticed significantly improved antler development in most of the areas hit hard by EHD in '07. Fewer mouths having to share the best food sources leads to greater performance of those remaining, fewer deer.
 
Any truth to that bsk? That the ehd is hardest on the biggest deer in the heard?>
 
BSK was that EHD that we had up here about 10 years ago(claiborne co.)When we were finding deer in and around ponds and creeks?

Seem like they called it blue tongue or something like that,
Some people thought CWD had hit and was going to wipe the deer plum out.And they were blaming the intro of Elk in neighboring countys.
 
Two primary types of Hemorrhagic Disease (HD) exist: Blue Tongue (BT) and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD). Although the symptoms of the two are very similar, differences exist between the two viruses (they are similar viruses but display genetic differences). Method of transmission between the two are the same.

The HD outbreak we experienced in '07 was EHD instead of BT, although many people generically call both diseases BT.
 
I think they said it was transfered by a parasite.Sure put a lick on these deer .But we have more then ever now.Seems they are healthy and We see more good Bucks.
 
HD is transmitted by small biting flies called midges. They drink blood from an infected deer and then transfer it to the next deer they bite. Once infected, the midges become a reservior for the disease.

Infected deer develop a severe fever and often congregate at water sources to drink and cool themselves. This is why HD infected deer are often found dead around ponds and streams.

I wondered the same thing about the big deer. I ran into a State Biologist in Illinois a couple years ago. He was the one who told me about it generally affecting the more mature of the herd. Said that it was because the larger bodied animals required more water, therefore were more likely to become infected simply because of the odds.

I didn't argue with him.

Another more about the midges and ED. And I KNOW this to be true. THe first hard frost usually gets the insects. And if the deer DO make it, we've seen the hooves sloughing off as late as January.

In theory, the youngest deer should be most susceptible to HD, as they have the lowest chance of having been exposed to it in the past and developed antibodies against the disease. I think why many assume it hits older males most often is due to the social behavior differences between the two sexes when HD is most common--late summer. Does are often still tending fawns in isolated fawning territiories yet bucks are in bachelor groups. Does tend to become infected and die separately, while bachelor groups of older males travel together into infected midge areas hence all become infected at the same time and often die together in large groups. Finding 4 or 5 dead older males together around a water source tends to give observers the impression the disease is hitting older bucks harder.
 
Makes sense to me, but then what the biologist said sounded reasonable at the time.

All I KNOW is that in areas where EHD did hit, we MOST DEFINITELY see fewer MATURE deer, does OR bucks.

I hope this has changed this season.

I was lucky. We only lost yearling bucks and young to middle-aged does on my place.
