My brother got on the board yesterday with a nice 8. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sick to my stomach last night.

I stuck this 10 this past Sunday right at dark. Tracked him nearly 400 yards before losing blood. Went back the next morning and did some grid searching with no luck. Fast forward to last night and my brother called around 9:00 saying he had only found two drops of blood. I got him in touch with a guy who has a dog and they hooked up. The dog and handler searched for 2 hours and weren't able to come up with the deer. I was pretty sick. It looked like we were 0-2 on the year, and to make matters worse both the spots we were hunting may be turned back into cattle pasture next year, so they may not be productive going forward. Brother was still confident that he made a lethal shot last night and got up this morning and went back to start grid searching. After not finding the deer in the grown up field he started walking the fence line and BAM, there he was not 20 yards across the fence. Dog got within 10-15 yards of the deer last night and just couldn't close the deal. I'm pumped for him, and at least somewhat relieved that both of us didn't blow a great opportunity. Now I'm just hoping my shot wasn't lethal and the 10 will show back up. All we measured on his deer were the G2s, which are both just a hair under 10.

Nice deer. Did your brother get a refund from the tracker?

No. He still paid the guy for his time. It wasn't an easy track at all for the dog. No blood and a ton of deer had come and gone through the field making it tough for the dog to stay on the right track.

Makes sense.

Congrats to your brother on a great buck. That shows a lot of confidence in his shot placement and his determination even after a dog couldn't find it. How far did the deer travel and was his shot good?

The deer went maybe 150 yards. The shot was fine, just probably not an angle most people would recommend. The deer was quartering to quite a bit. Arrow went in just in front of shoulder and buried in the deer's cavity. It stopped just short of creating an exit hole, so there was basically no blood to be found.
