Beautiful buck if not a shooter!!
That's a shame. He would be a really nice 8, really like those long tines.

I killed a twelve pt last year that broke off his right g2. It was about ten inches long. He somehow broke it right before he lost his velvet. It ended up only 4 inches. It was heartbreaking because it stuck out 3 inches wider than any part of his rack.
Not too early for a fight. Even some aggressive sparring could do it.

The largest buck I've seen while hunting, especially body size, had only half a rack. I let him pass twice, and never saw him again.

Thats a tough one.
I passed a giant twice last season because he had a broken beam. I wanted to kill the buck that was big enough to beat him up.

Commonly, the buck is relatively "young & dumb".
He's taking on bucks out of his league, and getting his tines broken.
On the bright side, maybe BSK will given him a pass this year because of the broken tine.
Next year, this buck will have more antler mass (and fighting wisdom), becoming less likely to break his tines.
Note how often fully mature bucks do not have any broken tines.
Mature bucks don't spar or play. When they fight it's for real. They lose entire beams, eyes, get gored, broken legs, locked together with their opponent, and sometimes even die. All that pushing one another around in youth is preparing for the real deal when they mature.

Not seeing any broken racks so far this year....
Lots of bucks with just a spike on one side from pedicle injuries in the past.
But I'm still seeing bucks in bachelor groups. Even mature bucks in bachelor groups.... They just aren't fired up for the rut at all this year.

I'm starting to become concerned by the lack of uptick in activity. I would sure hate to see another "drought/acorn-failure" pattern emerge, which is a very late and muted rut.
I'm checking cams tomorrow, and if no surge in activity, I'll have to assume were going to see the drought/acornless year pattern.

So far none of our bucks are showing signs of being busted up. But late October is when that usually happens for us. One of our best bucks last year broke off his right main beam right about this time. Once that happened we agreed to let him pass. Of course that meant I would have several opportunities to kill him, including this broadside shot at 40 yards.
I've not had a season this rough in many years. Like Mega said I'm still seeing bucks in groups. Only the very oldest are alone and beginning to act rutty but not aggressively. I'm seeing very little rut sign.
My Ohio place is even worse than here. Almost no sign at all and the drought was worse than here so almost zero acorns except in the lowlands, but my property is all upland & ridge country. Was there over the weekend and heard one single acorn fall. I usually need a hardhat because it's raining acorns. Turned around after one day & came right back home. ROUGH season for me this year.

I'm seeing rubs and scrapes, but not at the level of what I would see in a good acorn year. It's almost as if this year is a cross between an adequate acorn year and acorn failure year.

Another interesting thing is on one end of my property, all the buck usage of scrapes is at night. On the other end, almost all in daylight. Weird.

No, because we have so many of them. I have three spring-fed creeks that have never run dry, even in the worst droughts.

Amazing how everyone is seeing bucks still in bachelor groups. My local groups broke up as soon as velvet shed.

I have one picture of a mature buck and several pics of 1-2 year olds. They are all by themselves. On the broken antler thing, last year I had several bucks with broken main beams esp late in the year. I don't know if it was all due to fighting or what. I've been wondering if they're fighting a buck that twists his antlers or what. I had mature bucks all the way to 2 year olds broken up

I've killed a couple over the years with broken main beams. Imagine the strength it would take to snap a 1" diameter main beam. I watched a video and the guy making the video said that 3.5 year olds are usually the most aggressive. They will sometimes push and fight so hard they will crack their skull plates.

That absolutely does happen. I've seen several older bucks that died of brain infections after cracking their skull plates.
