I have been holding out for a "big" buck all year, passing numerous does and young bucks along the way. Well my neighbor who occasionally hunts the property doesn't have quite the discipline. Saturday morning we're hunting, and it was just darn slow. It evidently wasn't for the people on the neighboring property. After hearing 10 or so shots from over that way, they drove a tractor through the field and loaded one up.
I get a text from neighbor about 8:45 saying he's thinking about getting down soon. At 9:15, 5 does come trotting by me, and I didn't even think about shooting. Well I see them running through the back field toward my buddy. BANG! I figure well heck if he's gonna make a little noise I will too. After his shot, the deer ran away from him and stopped in a place where I could see them through a gap in the trees, and I made a 175 yard shot with my .300 win mag across the tree line at one of the does. I felt good about the shot but wasn't sure if I'd made contact. 3 of the does ran toward me and one of them folded up. I was pretty pumped, and my neighbor was really surprised because he didn't know I could see the deer. It feels good to get that one off my back!
This is the first deer for me and my buddy since our dads passed away. Two big ole does! Mine on the right was my first kill with the Barnes Vortx ammunition.
