I've just gotten started and already my brain is mush. Just got through my first 10,000 trail-cam pictures of the year. And going to be a big year. Clients all told have out over 100 cameras. That will end up being a lot of pictures. May top my record of 385,000 images in a season.
 
What are you looking for? Growth, age?

I think most people use them just to see racks, some age but curious what you look at from a science angle.

WOW!! And aren't you looking at videos? Which take much longer than pics!!

I think most people use them just to see racks, some age but curious what you look at from a science angle.
Running a photo census. I'm counting all of the bucks, does and fawns in pictures to get sex ratio and fawn recruitment. Also identifying all of the unique bucks to get buck age structure an antler growth. So every image has to be gone through twice: once to count the deer and a second time to identify each buck in each photo.
 
How do you distinguish does from each other?
You can't. That's why identifying the unique bucks is so important. Although you're making the assumption that each doe or fawn is being repeat photographed about the same number of times as the bucks are (which may or may not be true), at least you are using the same methodology each year, so the trends in data should be statistically valid. But you take the total number of buck photographs, divide that by the number of unique bucks, and you get an average repeat photograph rate. You can then the divide the total number of doe and fawn pictures by the average repeat photograph rate to get an estimated number of unique does and unique fawns. For example, if you have 200 bucks in photographs, but all of those buck photographs actually only contain 10 unique bucks, then on average, each buck is being repeat photographed 20 times. You can then divide the total number of does in photographs and fawns in photographs by that repeat photograph rate (20) to get a calculated number of unique does and unique fawns.

Then when the next picture of an 8-pointer comes up, I can run down the list of all 8-pointers, read their descriptions, and for those that sound similar, go through and look at the pictures of each similar buck. If none of these match, he gets added as a new unique buck.

Often, I'm looking for the most subtle of differences. Do his tines curve or lean inwards? Are they straight up? Do they lean forwards, straight up or back? What is the difference in length between the G2s and G3s? How are his browtines arranged? Do they come out near the bases, or farther up the beams? How long are they? Do they lean inwards, go straight up, or splay outwards? Are there any differences in length between his matched tines left and right? Do his beams turn inwards at the ends? Swoop upwards? How close are the beam-tips from touching? Sometimes you will have 3 or 4 8-pointers that are nearly identical. That makes things tough.

It all sounds fairly simple until you have 100+ unique bucks for that property! Then you switch to the next client's data and you have to reset your brain to his 100+ bucks!

But that's what I get paid to do, so...

Screw that! I don't envy you. I keep up with a dozen or twenty 2.5yr+ bucks each year for my own personal reasons and as much I love this stuff, even that sometimes becomes monotonous. And I'm not keeping near the amount of data you are. What do you do with the data? What do your clients do with the data? Is it being used in some way to aid in actual hunting? Or just a survey of what animals are using the property so you know how to adjust management practices?

What I do is save the photos/vids of identifiable bucks and label them with ID, date, and location. If a buck ever becomes something I want to hunt then I can type in his ID and pull up all photos/vids of him beginning from the very first. From there I can begin looking at each date and use Weather Underground to see what the weather & wind was doing at the exact moment the trail cam was triggered, and more often than not a pattern begins to reveal itself. If it's a fairly consistent daytime pattern with timing and/or weather then going forward I can with relatively good accuracy predict when the buck will be on the property and what his favorite spots are. I've learned from doing this that individual buck movements aren't always as random as they seem. Each individual forms specific habits unique to himself, some more so than others and some less. The tighter the pattern, the better the odds of tagging him.

I also use locations as the key word in a search and can to a pretty high degree pinpoint timing patterns for when that spot is best to hunt. A lot of bucks overlap and years come & go, but locations are static. And it's uncanny how certain spots get used the same way at the same times regardless of which buck or which year.
 
And I'm not keeping near the amount of data you are. What do you do with the data? What do your clients do with the data? Is it being used in some way to aid in actual hunting? Or just a survey of what animals are using the property so you know how to adjust management practices?
The data is used for assessing herd dynamics and tracking them over time. This can highlight management adjustments that are needed. What is the adult sex ratio over time versus the doe harvest? If sex ratio is skewed too far towards does, then a higher doe harvest is needed. However, these days, it's often the opposite. The adult sex ratio is well withing acceptable limits, so perhaps it's finally time to back off the doe kill a bit.

Is the buck age structure getting better, worse, or staying the same? Each of these would suggest some type of management alteration. Has there been an improvement or decline in average antler growth per age-class? A decline might suggest the need for habitat improvements (unless the decline can be linked to an acorn failure or drought the previous year).

And surprisingly, what I use the data for most is for those clients who are interested in maximizing antler potential on mature bucks. Not every client wants that, but the club clients usually do. I look for bucks that show great potential as 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year-olds, and then make laminated cards that are hung in each shooting house with pictures of these bucks with DO NOT SHOOT THIS BUCK printed in bold red! What I'm trying to do is get the members to pass up the very top-end 2 1/2s and 3 1/2s that might accidentally get shot because of their high-end antlers. These are the bucks that have the best potential to be whoppers at maturity. In addition, for clients who ask for it, I provide another set of photo cards with "management bucks" - those bucks that are very unlikely to ever be a top-end buck, no matter how old they get. These bucks are almost always fork-horn or 6-point 3 1/2+ year-old bucks. Some clubs allow guests and Youth Hunters to shoot the management bucks, or give something to members that shoot them (like a discount on membership the next year).

Some clubs even have websites where I upload all of the best buck pictures. This gets the members fired up. It also gives me a chance to do a little "aging on the hoof" training - getting members used to recognizing the body characteristics of a mature buck. A lot of times members are hesitant to pull the trigger on a nice buck not sure if he is mature or not. But if they've looked at pictures of the antlers of all the known mature bucks on the property enough times, they will recognize the bucks immediately when they see them.

As for use in hunting, I'm primarily running baited censuses right now. Those don't tell you much as the deer are leaving their normal routes to come to the feed. But an unbaited census during the hunting season - THAT can be a goldmine for hunting tactics!

Absolutely! Folks that haven't done this before have no clue how hard and time consuming it is. I learned how to do it from you on TNdeer & have done it annually for past 12 years. 20-25 cams is bad enough, can't fathom trying to do 100...

Ames had a young researcher who gathered buck data from 125 cameras placed over scrapes attempting to identify individual bucks and their travel patterns. I wonder if he was able to make any sense of the data. I never saw his results but I could empathize with the amount of work required. Best of luck!

For my own property, while running a season-long census, I keep very meticulus records. I'm using these to conduct two research projects. The first is looking at the time bucks are moving and getting their pictures taken. My data set for this project is now 3,492 camera triggers by bucks at all types of camera locations. I'm looking at the hour of the day/night these occur, based on the buck's age. The second research project is looking at times and especially behavior of bucks at scrapes. I'm recording whether the buck worked the overhanging limb, worked the scrape (pawed it out), and whether the buck urinated in the scrape. And again, I'm looking at this data by age. Turns out Miss State did this exact study as well, and my data matches theirs. Because the scrape behavior study requires video to catch specific behaviors, and I've only been using video for three years, my data set for this study is smaller, yet still includes 667 unique scrape visits.

Of course, far more goes into making harvest recommendations for a property than just herd dynamics, such as food resources. How much of the best food resources are getting eaten away each year? The only way to know that is to really look close at what plants are being browsed, how hard, and when. But the photo census data can really be eye-opening when it comes to food and cover. I posted the below graph before, but I think it illuminates how habitat management can play a huge role in how many deer will use a given piece of land. Notice how the deer population peaks a few years after logging operations (this is a primarily hardwood habitat). The flush of early-stage regrowth food sources, as well as good cover habitat, allows more deer to inhabit the landscape.

That graph is quite revealing. Bucks show a maximum variance of about 20, while does show a variance of around 65. And bucks vary only gradually on a curve whereas the doe population shows a couple significant jumps. The most striking to me is the fawn variance. With fawns jumping so significantly after a hurricane mess it's easy to imagine the second timber cut was not nearly as large or extensive as the first. Regardless, the graph really accentuates the increased fawning cover that new growth provides. Not sure how big that property is but those numbers seem fairly significant. The largest farm I hunt is less than 300 acres and even on there it's hard to imagine 25 different identifiable bucks living there, and it's in ag country. On the hardwood properties the numbers are much lower.

Absolutely correct. First cut was about 30 acres. Second cut 20. Hurricane damage and third cut was 110 acres.

That's my personal property - 500 acres. The numbers can get so high because we're concentrating all of the deer during the fall from thousands of acres of surrounding ag land that is wiped clean of cover after harvest.
 
This is what I'm talking about with trying to keep track of so many 8-pointers. The picture below shows two 8-pointers that are nearly identical. Both have almost identical G2s and G3s. They even curve inwards the exact same way and have the same height comparison between the G2 and G3 tines. Both have beams that sweep around and the tips are about the same distance apart. But it is the slight difference in browtine shape that distinguishes them. One has straight up matching brows while the other has slightly offset brows with his right brow having that little outward crook in it. Keeping track of these tiny differences can be a nightamre.

Oh, and I was wrong. It wasn't 48 different 8-pointers. I looked it up and one property I did a camera census for had 57 different 8-pointers I had to keep track of!
