I am new to food plots. I have 5 small spots on top of a ridge in Perry County that are already cleared. Very rocky soil in the entire county but especially on top of the ridges. Do y'all think a box blade would do a decent job of breaking the soil up for the first year. I was thinking maybe turn it up with the teeth on the box and then sow the seed and then drag it. also what do you think would grow on top of a rocky ridge?
 
I used to do my plots with box blade. I would fully adjust the teeth and adjust tilt on the box slightly forward. The first pass or two on new ground, you may have to unload sod the collects in the box, but work really well after getting to dirt. I would spray with gly real good a couple times to get a good top kill.

If real rocky, but you have good plant material, you may want to spray, throw and mow method... skip tilling all together.

Worse thing I ever did with my lower field. I was picking up huge rocks for months. :(

Now I do the STM method.
 
So, if I understand what I have read correctly on the spray throw and mow method you spray poisen, after about two weeks broadcast your seed and then bush hog to let the dead grass cover the seeds. Tell me if that is not correct. Then what seed would be best to throw and would it help to run an atv disc over the grass to cut it in a little?

That is correct. I like to throw a mix: wheat, oat, rye grain, crimson clover and a little brassicas in September before a rain front.

Do it just before a rain front comes through.
