The "bottle" reels:

I have only seen like one in my life and if I remember right you squeeze the trigger and it puts pressure on the string, against something else and that makes it reel in.

If you don't squeeze it, it won't come in.
Is that correct?
Are they all like that?
 
The ones I have used are all like that. The harder you squeeze, the harder to reel so you have to find that easy area in between.

Man has decided he wants that instead of the reel he has on his bow because it is so heavy.

I just don't think I would like the bottle reel and plus they are HIGH !!!! :eek:

I think he said it was like $90 !!!

No way I would pay that for one.
 
The bottle reel you are talking about is a ams reel. That's what I have. I've never used anything else. What I like about it is there is zero resistance. They are fast retrieve and the green/ orange line is easy to see.
 
The ams "retriever" is a good reel. they are "0 drag". Meaning they are not made for fighting fish. Most of the time you will have to set bow down and pull the line by hand on larger fish. Personally, I prefer the spinner type reels ( muzzy, Zebco, synergy). Much faster retrieval. But for a new shooter, the retriever is hard to beat. I keep four ams retrievers on my boat for back ups if a spinner breaks.
Check around, you can get them cheaper than $90. Check backwater bowfishing, bowfishing extreme or f & d archery.
 
He decided to stay with the reel after he went to buy it.
He figured out what I was telling him was right and didn't like it. :D

Just bought a new arrow rest and kept the reel rig he already has.
 
the first time you get a tangle in that zebco and it yanks the arrow back at your face, you will get the AMS.

I've had it happen with the AMS, when I've got into a bunch of fish and I did'nt notice line wrapped around the handle. Its definately an "eye opener".
Never ever had a fly back with a spinner. The line breaks before the arrow comes back. I'm only shooting 26 lbs of pull and the 200lb fastflight still breaks almost instantly. I have 200lb fast flight spooled on one spinner and 180lb power pro braid on another. Both lines will break almost instantly if the line hangs even with the light poundage I shoot.
 
If you use the correct line with the spinner, you will never have a arrow snap back on you, it will break first.

The bottles will work if your shooting low numbers, but it doesn't take long to hate them. They are very slow and on fanboats/airboats, you run over and loose arrows due to slow retrieval.
 
Ruger, tell your son to get him a can of silicone spray and spray the line on the reel before every trip. He will be amazed at how much better the line comes off the reel. Before I start shooting, I take the cap off the reel and squirt a few shots on my line. It works well on bottle type reels as well!!
