really nice rifle,,but I cant get it to shoot anything under 1.5 inches,,

I took the stock off and was gonna check things out and it has some kind of stuff in the recoil lug slot like it was kinda bedded from the factory,,doesnt look like it was done very well..

this rifle was bought from a store to be NIB,,did Win make an attempt at some kind of foam lookin stuff to bed the Classic Featherweight ,,

I really dont want to do anything to this rifle,,it is near mint,and I just dont want to mess it up..

I know where I could trade and get some boot for a SPS Stainless 25-06..
or do you think I should scrape this foam lookin bedding out and pillar glass bed it and start over,,

the best groups so far have been with 64 grs RL22 and 140SST at 1.55 inches at 100 yards.
 
there is one used just like mine on GB for 699,,the SPS 25-06 on GB NIB for 539,,

I would trade even + 100 pieces of brass..
 
My friend had a Mod 70 in 30-06 that had that same foam bedding stuff in it and he couldn't get it to group under 2" @ 100yds. he had all that junk removed and the rifle glass bedded and now it shoots .5" easy. If you like the gun and caliber combo, it is worth a try.

I have all of my M70's bedded except for the one I bought at Walmart. The M70's made closer to the shutdown of the New Haven plant I believe were finished sloppily. The bedding compound in my M70's were just blotted in there with globs of bedding compound on the stock that may cause pressure points elsewhere. After I had them bedded, they are all sub MOA shooters.

I have heard this same statement from two different gun stores. i would have hoped it would have been the opposite but guys outa a job will be sore i guess.
 
Model70 man, who did your bedded stocks? i recently purchased a 70 in 270 wsm and yet to get a scope on it. but i was surprised that the end of the barrel didnt have the crown like my dads 25 wssm model 70 had. i wander if that would make mine older? any way i cant wait and order a Conquest for it and get her sighted in.
 
Joe at Coal Creek Armory did most of Model70man's guns and a few of mine as well. He does good work and is a true rifle guy. He gets all of my rifle work.
 
Mr Big: 1 of my model 70's drove me nuts with poor accuracy, after I got real po'd at the gun, I pulled the action out of the stock and checked the bedding. My gun had a glob of bedding compound that was stuck to the recoil lug, and was sort of wedged into the bedding on the stock. I removed the bedding compound from the lug, screwed everything back together and proceeded to shoot MOA groups. If you think the bedding is suspect, fix it, I don't think you are going to hurt anything value wise, and you may like the results. I also will say that my Kimber 270 WSM was a little frustrating at first, after about 75 rounds down the tube, my groups started shrinking to the point that it's a .5 MOA rifle.

What type of M70 do you have? Is it the Super Shadow? IIRC, they do not come with a crowned barrel. Kimberman pretty much told you who bedded my rifles. I did however, have one of my rifles bedded at Predator Custom Shop. They will never get business from me again with their sloppy work.
 
Thanks for your guys info. its stainless with the camo duratouch stock. i think then its a supershadow stock? do you know of any issues the stainless might have? thanks
 
I run into light pressure at 65 and it was really mashing primers and the whole end of the cases were rubbed shiny from the primer all the way out to the edge at 66,,I didnt shoot the ones loaded at 67.

with Retumbo the manuals list 71 as max,,ran into same thing at 68 with that powder,

So you are reaching pressure with two different powders before max? Excessive headspace?

Are these new cases? If not, are you neck sizing, partial F-L, or full-length?

What primers?

Need some different .277" bullets to test? I've got plenty and don't mind to send you some. PM me your address and I'll get you a variety pack out.

Seems odd you are hitting pressure 2-3gr low.

Stick with it though - I know you'll figure it out.
 
I have got the stuff to do a simple glass bed job,,I have done 10-12 and can do pretty good,,if I did this and it still wont break 1MOA ,how would it being worked on effect it`s trade in value,,
 
Never seen foam bedding in one hot glue epoxy yes,sometimes done ok and others get rid of and re-bed.

Might want to try some RL-19 and 140 Partitions. Only load my uncle found to be worth a hoot in the one he gave me,I haven't with much myself.
 
Mr.Big- In case you want to try it the load mentioned above was-

140gr Partitions
RL-19 61.5 grs
WLRM
2.810 col

AB's at 2.860 COL weren't and haven't been gave a good look yet.
