i have seen this word on some browning rifles i have been looking at on there website and am curious what the difference is in for example a .308 winchester and .308 win (BOSS)???

Ballistic Optimized Shooting System. Really reduces the recoil on the rifle. Really loud too! I have one on a 30-06. I love it but if you shoot 2 or 3 shots hunting without hearing protection it makes your ears ring. Sounds like bacon frying in a skillet for 5 minutes or so

You can also adjust it to tune your barrel harmonics to different loads for better accuracy. You have to shoot a lot of rounds to try the different settings and find the right one for your load. If you reload, it's probably just as easy to try different loads and find one the gun likes. If you're only going to use factory ammo, the BOSS gives you some flexibility to adjust the rifle to the factory load.
I shot mine ONCE without hearing protection while hunting and I'll never do it again. Pretty sure I suffered permanent hearing damage from that one shot. I took the BOSS off the gun and got a BOSS-CR which doesnt' have the holes so it doesn't reduce recoil at all, but you can still adjust it to tune the gun and it's no louder than a regular rifle.
I'll never buy another gun with the BOSS.

I love mine in 7mm Rem Mag. Yes it does make it loud but my 7mm kicks like a baby. It does make your ears ring when you shoot at a deer with no hearing protection but I never let that bother me.

I had one on a 300 win mag. Knockd recoil down to 308 level. I would not think it would be needed for a 308. Too Many drawbacks.
Do the ports in them cause any accuracy issues if rain or snow gets in them? Granted we don't see much snow but always wondered if it would affect the accuracy at all.
