Yes, it looks simple, but if you've never done it, there are a few unanswered questions...

Does it matter which end of the bore you go through?
How many times should I pull it through for just a regular cleaning? - I shot 40 rounds today.
What solvent or solvents do you put on the snake? Please be specific?
Do you put it on in front or behind the brush part of the snake?
Do you put an oil on afterward? And where do you put the oil on the snake?
I was told I could hand wash the snake or put it in a tied sock in the washing machine. Sound right?

Thanks for putting up with a bunch of questions.

i have a couple snakes 12 and 20 gauge. I spray some hoppes #9 bore cleaner down the barrel and on the snake; run the snake through a couple times each way. look through the barrel and if it's clean you're done. If not run it through a couple more times. The hoppes seems to keep it from rusting so i don't use any oil. As for washing i throw it in the kitchen sink with some dish detergent (while the wife's not looking) and wash it then hang it to dry.
