I was needing to know if you buy a boat that has a sticker good until 2019. And you have the persons registration card in hand. Can you just wait till 2019 and get a new sticker and register it in your name then. Or whats the procedure legally. Do you think i would get a ticket. Or would it just not be an issue. Thanks

You are required to register the boat in your name as soon as you purchase the boat. If it is not in your name, you will be subject to a citation, even if you have the previous owner's card.

To register the boat in your name, you will need a bill of sale from the owner. Some county clerks require the bill of sale to be notarized. You take the bill of sale to your county clerk's office, pay sales tax on the transaction, and then complete the boat registration form. You can operate the boat on the temporary registration copy until you receive your registration card once the sales tax and registration fees are paid.
