Boat motors

Buying a new boat and can't decide on what brand motor to put on it. Between 150 and 200 HP are there any suggestions?

I wouldn't touch an etec. Either put a merc optimax or the new yamaha sho which is a 4 stroke. What brand boat are you buying?

Merc would be my first choice. Then Yamaha. Yamaha is a great engine with good gas milage but the Merc runs faster and better hole shot. IMO

when it's not in the shop. i owned 2 mercs in the past(granted one was not the engine's fault-i got into some ethanol and burnt the tops off 2 pistons). yamaha from here on out.

A good friend of mine has a charter bussiness here on long island. He averages 300 hours a year on his motors.He's owned merc,omc, yamaha & susuki. He swears by susuki.They also have a 6 year warranty.

yamaha for dependability low end torque and mid range. merc if u want to modify and fly. merc ros 300 drag .......

good friend in Beaufort swears at his Suzuki. 130 with out of the box fuel pump problems!

Yep cause Yamahas never break down......obviously you've owned very few outboards.

I would say stik has owned many outboards, and is entitled to his opinon....

i grew up with and around boats. i have had bad luck with every merc i have owned and the one evinrude was even worse. i bought my current yamaha in 1997 and it has never been in the shop other than routine maint.

Personally, I have had good service from Mercury, Johnson, and currently a 90hp yamaha 4 stroke. The 2 Evinrudes I have owned, one blew and the other had to have power packs replaced. The Mercury was a 85hp 1979 model bought new. A friend owns the motor and has yet to be in the shop. Of the 2 Evinrudes, 1 was a 200xp and the other a 150xp.The Johnson is a 1999 150. It has never been in the shop. My Yamaha is a 2004, and has been problem free.

If it were my $, it would go twords a Yamaha, no questions asked.

Love my Johnson 150 and my Evinrude 35. The 35 is a 1982 model and never missed a lick. Put a new impeller in it every other year and away she goes. The Johnson has been awesome, plenty of power, easy start and never an issue out of it. Just preventive maintenance with impeller changes and tunes.

My Merc 150 XR2...not so good...blew up...

Take good care of them and dont run them flat out all the time and they will treat you right.

Since you are looking at new power and not an older engine I would go with
1. Yamaha
2. Suzuki
3. Merc
4. Tohatsu
5. Paddles

OMC = Johnson/Evinrude has had a LOT of problems with their motors and every so often they come out with THE solution to whatever issue is causing their motors to blow up. I suspect it may be a QC problem in manufacturing but haven't followed the issue that closely.

Yamaha if properly maintained has the best record for mechanical problems.
Suzuki is as good or better than Yamaha but every few years they will come out with a model change that has problems.

Merc makes a pretty good motor but they tend to be temperamental and you can blow through some money on repairs until you figure out what your model wants in terms of maint.

Do some Google searches on the make/model motor you are considering and see what kinds of problems tend to plague that year. Choose the motor with the LEAST record of problems.

Doesn't matter how bad to the bone your rocket is if it strands you on the lake or is always in the shop.

Best advice. I do the same thing with vehicles too.
