Boat Motor Question...

I have a 2004 Yamaha 50HP Outboard Motor on my lil' 16ft G3 Boat. I ran all the gas out of the motor probably 3 years ago and it has been sitting in my garage probably that long. The boat and motor are pristine and it's dang shame it's been sitting in my garage for three year - down right embarassing is what it is - I digress.

Here's my question: Do you think I need to get the motor looked at or serviced before I take it out? I'd hate to harm the motor. I'm just nervous to put new oil in it, fuel it up, and crank it up since it's been sitting so long.

As long as everything checks out I'd use it. Some fresh gas and some (here we go again) marvel Mystery oil in it and run it with ears at home first.

If it cranked up and ran without problem I'd change the foot lube, change the water pump and let it roll. Lubes are a lot better now than they were a couple years back. If it's been in the garage it's probably not been subjected to temp extremes.

Stupid question: Do you add the Mystery Oil to the fuel or the oil reservoir? It's a 2 stroke engine.

You talking about like Sta-bil Fog Oil? Never used and don't know it's purpose is why I ask.

I add it to the fuel on my boat. Both end up in the same place but more so if you add it to the fuel. I run a yamaha 225 2 stroke.

you can take the plug out and add a little MMO there before you crank it as long as you don't flood it with it. Turn the engine over a few times after you add it and before you put the plug back in. It'll lube the cylinder that way.

if that was my motor, i would just spray wd40 in the carb and crank it...while inwater or earmuffs attatched of course. 2 stroke carbs are more resilient than 4 strokes, but i premix ALL my 2 strokes

i would not even think about going out with it no matter how well it ran after 3 yrs until i put a new waterpump in it 50 bucks verses a blown motor.you will be lucky if you don't have to rebuild the carbs 140.00 bucks maybe to do that

Thanks for the input guys...I think to be safe I'll probably do everything recommended even water pump replacement if it's such a minimal expense.
