After MAN hunted the other day he told me he had broke a sheer pin because he couldn't get to full speed.
I didn't think that sounded right but we pulled it out and it was bent up pretty good but wasn't broke.

Went ahead and replaced it yesterday and we used it this morning.

Coming out we were easing along at probably half throttle.
Then when he started speeding up it was like the motor came out of gear or something.
It would rev up real high and all forward progress would stop.
He would ease off the throttle and then give it some more gas and it would take off again.

He tried holding the shifter and it still did it.

Does fine till you load it up. :(
Any idea what it could be ?

25 hp johnson.
No idea on the year model.
 
Really don't think the prop is slipping since it has a sheer pin that goes through the shaft.

The groove that the pin goes in isn't wore out.

I figured, with my luck, it wouldn't be a simple problem.

Me and boat motors don't do well apparently.
 
ruger..its in your lower unit..the clutch dog is slipping over the gears..if you don't keep running it..you can have it fixed..if you run it too long you'll have to replace the gears and possibly the bearings in the L/U..to have the gears ground,a water pump and a seal kit installed usually runs between $400 and $450..depending on cost of the seal kit..i run a repair shop in paris..i'll get ya out as cheap and fast as I can if you want to bring it up..

Hey Ruger, is this your new motor? I would think it would still be under warranty.

That being said, I would look at the rubber prop bushing. Mine did the exact same thing a year ago. As long as I was at idle or just above it was fine but when you hit the throttle it sounded like it would spin out and go nowhere. The prop doesn't spin on the shaft but spins around the rubber bushing so the grooves on the shaft look normal. You can pull the prop off and look to see if there are loose rubber pieces or junk in the prop. A new bushing cost me $35 at a prop repair shop.

However, fins&fur sounds a lot more qualified than myself but what I suggested is something you can check out without having to haul it somewhere.

Was the prop new as well as the motor?

This. Same experience and I would have to play with the gear handle in order to get the gears engaged. If I let off the throttle and stopped I would have to jiggle the handle in and out of fwd and neutral again.
 
Well you old jinx. I was out in my boat last night and it was running great. I was heading back to the boat ramp about 7:PM running 3/4 throttle and felt a prop slip. Then a loud clanking noise. I had to call a friend to come get me. Don't know if it is the lower unit or the power head. Might be both.

I now clearly remember why I dislike boats.
 
Mine turned out to be a blown cylinder. The # 5 cylinder detonated and broke the pin. Suppose to get it fixed next week.
