So let me say first, I'm dumb as dirt when it comes to working on boat motors. I know hardly anything. Except for how to make it go and catch some fish in it. I have a 1991 19 foot Javelin, with an Evinrude 150 XP on it. I bought it 2 years from my wifes aunt, after her husband had passed away 3 years prior. The motor was only giving about half compression, and had it rebuilt at that time. Went thru the whole break in and all that. Fast forward to about a month ago. Had to have the power pack replaced. Took it out and ran it, and ran pretty good. Got on plane, no issue. A few days later I go back out. I idle out, and hit the throttle to get it to plane off, and it planes for about 50 yards, stalls and dies. So I try again. I push the throttle, but it won't accelerate to get on plane. It continues to do this a few more times. I went out today, and the problem has continued. When it cranks--and anybody that knows these motors, knows they are super cold natured and can take 5-10 minutes of holding your mouth right to get it to start--if you leave it in neutral and don't give it a little throttle, it will die. But when I idle out, put the motor all the way down and hit the throttle, it just won't accelerate. My tack doesn't work on the dash, but I feel like it wouldn't be past 1000 rpm's. So here's my question. Anybody have an idea of what to try? Or should I take it to my mechanic. Just wanted an opinion before I head 2 and half hours down the road to the boat shop. I thought maybe the carbs had trash, or maybe the new power pack isn't working right. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like it's running by out of fuel.... Have you pumped the ball while it's doing that? Or hit the choke?

First thing is the vent open and working on the fuel tank?

Fuel problem was my first guess check for possible leaks in line that is allowing air to be sucked in at higher usage also. Fuel filter is also a chance not sure about that motor or boat.

I have not pumped the ball or hit the choke. I don't know on the vent for the fuel tank. Where is that so I could look? Is that something that could close from one day to the next? Cause that's almost literally what happened. It ran good one day and then about 2 days later, it started this. Thanks for the advice!

Also check if there is a fuel filter in the line. That is what my tractor would do when the gas was not flowing into the bowl fast enough. after running at high speed for a second it would die because out of gas. The bowl will fill and crank over after a min. Drove me nuts. Sounds like fuel issue just have to figure out where :(

Vent should be on top of the gas cap. If could be that the cap needs to be cleaned if it is the style cap that vents around the edges instead of through a smaller cap in the middle.

I had a smaller hp Johnson do that. The carb float was stuck. If it's not reving at all since the first "stall", check the carb linkages. I had the linkage that connects carb to timing advance plate thing come loose. Done same thing.

I'm willing to pay somebody that wants to make some extra money to help me fix it or just fix it for me lol. I live in Watertown near Lebanon if anybody is close by

I had a 1991 Stratos with an Evinrude 150. I think Javelin was practically the same boat.
First, pump the ball at least 5-6 times till it gets firm. If it doesn't get firm eventually, you will need to go get one. This is more than likely your problem, since it ran good before. There should be one or two (depends on if you have dual tanks) small chrome vents on the rear top side edge of the boat. Check to see if a dirt dobber built a nest in there. There will be a hose from the top of the tank to the vent. Remove the hose from the tank and blow some compressed air through it. Don't use high pressure, cause there may be a check valve in the line and you don't want to damage it. That should fix it. If not, third is the VRO pump. If you have an oil tank, then the VRO pumps both gas and oil separately. If the oil has been disconnected, and you mix the gas and oil directly in the tank, then it just pumps the mixture through the fuel side of the VRO pump. Lots of times boat mechanics recommend this cause if the oil side goes out at full throttle, you can toast your motor. The buzzer might go off, but it's too late. Lastly, since your buzzer didn't sound, it's probably the primer bulb.
My boat, when I had it, did the same thing once. Changed the primer bulb and it didn't fix it. I ended up having to replace the VRO pump.
Hope this helps you out some.

My advice is to check the easy stuff yourself. Vent, bulb, filters(empty into a clear jar and inspect). Beyond that, if you're admittedly not good with this stuff(neither am I), take it to a mechanic and pay your fee.

Do you use ethanol gas?

I use 100% gasoline and mix the oil with the gas.

I used to run a Johnson and it did exactly the same thing. Seemed like a fuel issue to me, but it was the power pack. Could be a fuel issue, but I'm betting on the power pack. Seems like there aren't many good outboard mechanics left that can work on the old ones where the computer doesn't tell them what to replace. I know one but he's a long way from you.

Have you had the compression checked again lately? The mid 80's-mid 90's Evinrude and Johnson XP/GT motors were notorious for carbon fouling and sticking rings. They were gas hogs also. I am no expert by any means but there are several things it could be. Some things to consider to try yourself:

*Install new plugs if you haven't

*Replace primer bulb and fuel line.....ethanol use or not it is a 29 year old motor/outfit and the lining deteriorates and causes blockage. Check vent also as already mentioned...….no venting equals air lock.

*This year model Javelin/Stratos/Hydra Sport boats are about the time they went from two fuel tanks to one. If you have two tanks try moving your selector switch and see if the problem exists no matter which tank you are drawing fuel from.

*Do you have a Hot Foot throttle? Doesn't sound like you do.....Regardless, can you rev the motor up fine to higher RPM's while in neutral fine? Does it only fall on its face when you put it in gear and gas it hard? If so, very possible electrical and power pack or plugs/wires/coil issue.

It's too late now but I wouldn't have recommended rebuilding one of these.

Fuel issue of some sort, could be clogged filter, fuel pump going bad, heck it could even be a bad vent on the gas tank. That's just my guess.

If you don't find someone there's a guy that works on them at his house near the Nashville Superspeedway. He's on Couchville Pike 2-3 miles off of 840. I used to live down the road from him and had him work on a jon boat motor for me.
