Boat lighting question

The white 360 degree light that goes on the back of your boat:

Is there any limit as to how tall this has to be?

The white just has to be tall enough visible from 360 degrees at all times. So that typically makes it the tallest point on a given vessel. An example of a common issue is a 6 inch tall white light beside a 90hp engine cowling..... that is not visible from 360. Hope this helps

I have another question related to this...

When night fishing, are you required to have the light turned on while sitting still?

Whenever I'm in the back of my neighbors boat and fishing off the starboard side, that light blinds me and kills my night vision. Is it legal to take the light off while we're just sitting still, or does it have to be turned on?

All I know is.. a guy was fishing one night and heard a boat coming towards him.. he flipped on his running lights and the boat belonged to the water patrol and he got a big fat ticket..

Yes, the white light is required to be on at all times at night unless moored to a dock. You can cut off the red/green unless underway with the big motor.
