took it to williamsport a couple days ago, cranked up trolling motor, battery lasted 10 seconds. Was "fully charged" when I left for the lake. Paddling against the wind sucks! Time to take it for an exchange, it's an Exide from Academy, I should be able to get a new one for $60 if I bring the old one in. It was 2 years old and sat on the porch all winter in the battery box (probably a mistake to leave it there)

nothing at all.. there was a lady driving around trying the different lakes and she got skunked too. buddy even threw a nightcrawler in one of the coves and not even a bluegill. Just cold wind. When we left, we were driving back along the natchez trace parkway and the sun came out and it got warm. We stopped at a good smallmouth stream and I caught a few bass on live creek chubs
 
I just buy the best battery I can. But charge them after each trip. I leave them them plugged to the charger all winter long.

I use those little battery tenders you can get at Harbor Frieght, they keep a small trickle charge on the battery. I leave them on 24/7. Battery will last for years! They only cost bout $10.
 
Is your porch concrete by chance? Always heard that sitting on concrete will kill a battery.

I've heard the same thing but I don't understand how that's supposed to work. The battery was inside a plastic box sitting on brick.
 
To bad your not in east tn. Since the exude plant was near Bristol we used to buy there 2nds for under half price. They would be scratched or nicked or something but worked fine. Well I forgot. That place shut down last year so even if u were in east tn u couldn't get one and u would be here where the deer population sux.
 
the charger I have has a dial that goes down in charge rate as the battery charges up. So at 100% the charger is just at a slight trickle. guess I can leave it plugged in like that for a while to maintain the battery
 
Start off with a GOOD battery. They are worth the $. I use a float charger and keep it plugged in most all the time. You at least need to put a full charge on it once a month, even if you arent using it. Also, it is critical to put a charge on it as soon as you get home. Also, batteries on concrete wont hurt todays batteries. And cold weather will reduce a batteries output, but it wont hurt it. Heat is what kills a battery. Especially direct sunlight. Cover it if you can while fishing. Some manufacturers actually refrigerate their batteries before shipment and batteries stored in warehouses are rotated if stored on high racks with the batteries on lower racks at least once a month because of the heat factor in summer months. I buy my batteries from Battery Sales and Service in Memphis. The one i buy is $69. The same one at Bass Pro is $134.
 
Good advice! I also keep a charger/tender plugged in to mine year round. Deep cycle batteries however only have so many charges in them and I have never had one last more than 2 yrs and less than that in most cases. Its not that they go dead its that they wont last 8-10 hours without getting too weak for much more than a yr or two at most if used a lot!
