In one of the private ponds I fish in quite often I have noticed something that I find odd.
Might be normal but I haven't noticed it anywhere else I fish.
I'm not talking about ALL here, just the largest of the ones I catch.

The females are usually larger (longer) than the males.
These are all true bluegills, no coppernose or anything like that involved.

I have caught three TARP bluegill out of this pond in the last two years.
Last year I caught two in three days and they were both females and both exactly 10" long.
I caught another one this week and she was 10 1/4" long.
There is no telling how many males I have caught that are from 9 1/2" and 9 3/4".
Never caught one longer than 9 3/4.

Is it normal for the older, larger females to be longer than the males that are, I assume, the same age?

i think so. the ones i caught in 2018 were almost an inch longer. males averaged about 8.5 and females averaged a little over 9. but all my fishing is on KY lake and its a matter of timing to catch the females. you almost have to fish everyday. the females dont loiter around during the spawn, they come in quick, lay the eggs and are back out in deeper water recovering.
