I quit eating junk food, and cut back carbs to around 100g a day. Less sometimes a little more occasionally. I'm not following any diet plan, but I eat mostly protein and veggies. I took my a1c down to 4.6 - 4.9 from 9.6. I just started wearing one of those monitors for a couple weeks because we took away one of my medications and I wanted to monitor it closely. So far I have stayed within range and only gone low twice. Which, since I changed my diet, that happens. And one of the reasons I'm getting off one of my meds. When your sugar drops into the 40's it really sucks. I have dropped over 20lbs. I am only 7lbs overweight for my age. I'm hoping to get back to 5lbs under my max weight. So 12 more pounds to go. I still crave sugar, but I use fruit to fix that instead of junk food. I have found a great snack for diabetics - pork skins. I eat a bag every night while I watch my baseball game. And the other treat is those Outshine No Sugar Added Popsicles.
