How do deer react to the smell of blood? Does it turn them inside out like seeing a human in the tree? Say you shoot one and can drive the atv right up to it and get it so your not to leave behind a bunch of human scent and sweat dragging it out. Would the next deer freak out just from the smell of the blood? What's your experience?

I don't think it bothers them. I have had a dead deer I have killed laying on the ground, and had deer feed close to it, and not freak. I have also seen deer moving, and feeding very close to a gut pile from a previous kill, and cross the path of where it was dragged out.

zero reaction. seen them step right through a gut pile from the previous day. they're not real sure what they look like on the inside i guess.

I saw a small 6 point come up to a dead doe with a pool of blood around her and try to make her stand up. I guess she was in heat since he was pawing at her rear end. He acted like he didn't notice the blood at all.

During the juvenile season one evening last year, one of the kids killed a mature doe standing over a gutpile from a deer the other kid killed the same morning. I have never seen a deer spook from a gutpile.

I missed 1 of 2 bucks that were feeding within 5 yards of a stinking gut pile. I had texted my friend earlier that I smelled his rotting gut pile.

Killed a buck one evening, gutted it where it fell. went back next morning and killed another buck making a scrape beside the gutpile.

You can't do better than to have a hot doe dead on the ground in front of you. I've had bucks come in and literally pick them up off the ground with their antlers and bed beside them waiting for them to get up.
