Blood trail question

My cousin shot a small buck last night. He said it walked off stumbling up the hill and heard what sounded almost like a grunt. We went back an hour later and only found one pile of blood about 50 yards from where he shot it but no blood anywhere else. We searched the entire area for 2 hours. The blood had white slimy looking stuff in it. I'm guessing that he coughed up that blood and that's what he thought was a grunt. Anyone have a clue as to where he hit this deer? The blood didn't have any smell.

Sounds like a superficial wound, slimy substance likely from where hide is attached to the meat. Will bleed just like a cut on your leg for a short time then clot up and its done. Just a guess of course based on the info you gave.

White slimy blood.. I don't know. Watery blood a shot between the spine and the vitals.

Sounds like a non fatal hit, but you never know.
