I have a spot on a ridge top I like to hunt and some of the deer walk a bench just off the side of the ridge, it's only about 60yds from my stand but I can't see it. I'm thinking about used a short section of fence or maybe a tree top to make the deer walk around it up the hill another 15-20 yards where I can see them. What's y'all's thoughts?

I think I'd just move my stand down to where I can hunt the bench. When you start messing with a deer's daily pattern, they may just avoid the place completely.

They might walk down below it instead of above it?

The hill gets real steep below the trail so I don't think they'd walk around that side

Where my stand is now is "the spot". If I move to where I can see the bench I'll give up way more than I'd gain. I'm may just scratch the idea and just continue to sacrifice that one trail

In that case, I don't think you'd lose much, if anything, by blocking that trail and seeing if they'll come closer. If you do try it, report back after the season. It would be interesting to know how it goes.

I used a similar tactic when I created a small food plot I limited access by laying a couple treetops down so they only came in on 2 trails. But I did it that year in May so they had all summer to get used to it. Definitely worked and I shot a few deer out of that stand.

I had BB's thoughts as well. Is this public or private? If your allowed, hinge cut a tree to funnel them uphill. Or slant a 2-strand barbwire fence up toward you. Nonetheless, seems like more work than you'll be rewarded....unless you just hinge cut a tree for 10 seconds

It's private property

Man I've been where you are. What to do? Hmmm. It's a gamble. So here's a better question are you willing to mess up your spot to possibly better it? Good luck on the answer and let us know the outcome.

Why not set up another stand on the bench and then you can decide which one to hunt based on the wind and what the deer have been doing. Sounds like that bench is a great place for an older buck to slip by under your nose
