Blackhorn 209

First I have to admit I am a sucker for new stuff and have been taken in by hype and pretty packing more than once, but I am really itching to try the Blackhorn powder. Even with my weakness for gadget expermentation I find the Blackhorn to be a bit pricey, however, I have read that due to obtaining the same velosity with much fewer gr. per shot it is actually less expensive to shoot compaired to 777. Anyone shot it, did it preform as advertised and what do you think about that cost per shot claim?

I have found it to be just a little more powerful than 777 2f and about the same as 777 3f. If you're comparing it to Pyrodex or Goex then yes I would say you would make up some of that money with smaller volumes. I think the big selling point is the non-corrosive attribute.

i have been shooting it since may and i like it. shooting 90 grains and it has more punch than 777 at 100 grains.
much cleaner than 777 or pyrodex and as been said non-corrosive which is worth the difference for me.
use a good hot primer.
if u shoot 777 pellets it will be basicaly the same price per shot.
i always hated cleaning my encore with water and with 209 no water needed.

I use it and I like it. I havent done any cost per shot comparisons though.

BUY IT - very accurate (I shoot 120gr in my Encore) non-corrosive, no crud ring or cleaning between shots, clean it when you want with regular smokeless chemicals and very little smoke.

My Uncle loves it in his T/C Omega 45 but he still has to swab the barrel on it to seat the next round if using sabots,which has been the case form day one in it. Power Belts or Conicals no problem but they haven't shoed the consistentaly of sabot so far,but they shoot lights out with 777 in it with them.

What velocity differences are you seeing between 777 and BH209 through the chronograph?

hey Chris out of my encore bh209 was getting nearly 1900 fps average with 90 gr. and very near 1800 with 100 gr. 777.

With my Encore Pro Hunter and a 250 gr. Hornady SST (Shockwave)and a MMP sabot, shooting 3 50 gr pellets of 777 I get an average velocity of 2185 fps. With two 777 pellets I average 1865 fps. Shooting Blackhorn 209 with the same bullet and sabot I get 2065 fps with 120 grains. That's about 100 fps slower than the velocities shown on the can. Shooting 100 gr. of Blackhorn 209 and the same bullet I get 1893 fps. Accuracy with both powders is about the same, three shot group around 1 1/2 inch at 100 yards. For primers I'm using the Winchester ML primers with the 777 and regular Winchester 209 primers with the Blackhorn 209. Ignition is positive with both. To maintain accuracy with the 777 I swab the barrel after every shot with one T/C presoaded cleaning patch and two dry patches. Shooting the Blackhorn 209 I didn't clean at all until through shooting. Every bullet/sabot loaded as easy as the first with the Blackhorn 209.

My only complaint is the $38 for a 10 oz. bottle. They must make this stuff out of gasoline.

Are you getting any blow back or excessive carbon deposits in the primer area? With my knight, the receiver is very dirty.

No blow back or carbon. The Encore breech plug seats the primer like it does a cartridge in a centerfire barrel. Usually not enough carbon to see on a patch.

They recommend using Federal 209A or CCIM primers not made for muzzleloader primers.I tried it yesterday in my Encore and at 100 yds. using 120 grs. BH209 and barnes 250 TMZ the poi was 2" higher than with the same charge of 777. ? Was using federal 209A primer and shot 7 shots without cleaning and groups were both under 1".

thanks, nimrod, i spent a lot of time last night cleaning my knight receiver out. Hard carbon deposits. the barrel is a breeze to clean but that breech area is tough. The plug comes out easy and is not too hard to clean. I do have to ream out carbon deposits from the nipple.

Nimrod, is your POI the same from a clean barrel as a dirty barrel. My Knight is different, so i'm going to hunt with a dirty barrel. With the BH209, shouldn't be a problem with corrosion.

I have feel in love with the stuff my remington likes it gonna break the encore in with it tomarrow and see how it preforms with it if all goes well I'd say it will be my powder of choice I also recomend the ccim 209 primers if not you could have delays and that a'nt good

It shoots about an inch high and an inch left with a clean barrel. That's the good thing about Blackhorn. I plan to keep a fouled barrel all season. I'll clean it after the first season and after the second. Then I'll foul it befor I hunt with it.

The first ML seasonin TN, which starts Sat., is 9 days long. I'm not sure aout the second one, but I think it's only a week long.
