Black Warrior Hogs

Used to all the time when I lived in AL. Since I moved to TN, it's not worth the $$$ for the out of state hunting license; for me anyway.
The BW WMA is wholly contained in the Bankhead NF. You can hunt hogs in the Bankhead NF outside the BW WMA 365 days per year.
You can only hunt hogs in the WMA:
- During the twice yearly (Sept. and March) special hog hunt seasons
- During deer days (6-8 days per year per side :bash: )
- Or during any other scheduled and legal hunting season - using guns and bows legal for that season (i.e. deer guns during deer and hog season, squirrel guns during squirrel season, turkey guns during turkey season and so on).
A friend of mine and I bought Savage .22 Mag rifles for the express purpose of hunting hogs in the BW WMA during squirrel season. As you can probably guess, using a bolt action .22 Mag on hogs is not a "spray and pray" type of hunting. You not only have to get close enough to them, you have to hit them just right (preferably behind the ear) to be successful.
Of all the times we spent in the woods looking for hogs, we only saw them once and that was up top vs. down in the valleys and hollows. The one shot I took with my 45-70 missed the vitals of the one hog I shot at. :( This was the special hog hunt Sept. 2013 IRC.

Note that you need an AL license, plus WMA license plus the WMA permit (which is the WMA rules and map provided at the first link above) to hunt in the BW WMA.
If you CC or OC a sidearm, read rule #29 at the bottom of the second page of the WMA map. TN CCW/CPL/whatever it's called is accepted in AL, so carry with confidence.

Have been thinking about it as well,but funds are tight right now so probably won't go try it this year

To small game hunt in AL is about $45 for 3 days plus the WMA stamp which is about $10. This allows you to hunt hogs with small game weapons. Its not super cheap but not overly pricey either.

The lic. Is cheep but I m going to need a 22mag,that's where I'm tight on funds.fixin to drop all my spare change to take my cousins son duck hunting in ark.for his graduation present

Im not sure about shooting a hog with No. 4 shot so I will be bringing a .22, might ask around and see if any of my buddies have a .22mag.
Just have to get up close and personal with them to shoot them behind the ear. Head shot with a .22 is how my friends kill domesticated hogs every year for sausage, granted they are within 5 feet of the hogs.

It sounded like a million of them crashing through the pines and splashing in the swamp. I looked hard for a tree...but the limbs were every bit of 10 foot off the ground, so I got behind a tree and had my gun ready for action.
Walking out later that afternoon I got stopped by a warden, told him about the hogs and he got mad at me because I didnt shot them! I told him I survival was my first and only thought at that moment.

After colorado I relize I can't sleep on those pads any more,hammocks are a great thing.
One of the things I was looking at was there is from what I can tell there are rivers going through the back country with kayak access,but not sure I'd want to leve my kayak unattended.thouhght it would be fun way to access the backcountry

Dang I'm only about an hour and a half away from Bankhead and have a few contacts that way. I may have to give that a go
