Birthday Limits

My brother turned 40 today so to celebrate we took off work and headed to the river. We got a bit of a late start and the morning started off terribly slow. Our first 3 stops only produced 2 bites total, but they did both at least keep. Stop number 4 was the best spot of the day. It produced 11 keepers and quite a few more short fish. The next 3 stops were just like the first 3. Then we finally landed on more fish in spot 8. We finished up our limit there. We stopped back by spot number one right before we quit since it was so close to the ramp and quickly caught a nice female and culled out one of our smaller fish that was still alive. Was a great way to spend a milestone birthday with my brother doing something we both love. Catching our limit was just icing on the cake.

Pretty rare that we ever catch a walleye anymore. We used to catch 5-10 a year seems like but we haven't caught it one in at least 3-4 years now.

On the Illinois River, we had the same scenario.

Both. Yesterday was really odd. We caught short males and females along with keeper males and females all in the same spot. Mix was really close to 50 / 50. That almost never seems to happen. To make it even more odd when I cleaned them most of the females from that spot must be late spawners, because their eggs weren't even close to being ready.

Here in TN I think it pretty much depends on where you're fishing. Where I live, years ago it was all Sauger, no Walleye or at least very few. For whatever reason they stopped managing for Sauger and swapped over to Walleye. I haven't caught or heard of anyone catching a Sauger in over 20 years. However the Walleye are doing great.

thanks for the info. theyre getting lined up to actually spawn then. i was down there for a bit a few weeks ago and caught some big females. i was actually looking for some yellow perch where ive caught them there before. they should have been closer to the dam.

I'm weird and like sauger more. Nothing wrong with walleye but as a fish I find sauger to be fascinating. Both taste identical to me
