reguardless of whatever anyone tells you, take the puppy thru the "force fetch" deal, its the basis of all training.

if you want some help or want to see a "Master Hunter" run and train, I live in Brownsville, not that far when training a puppy

Be carefull you can ruin a dog if you dont know what you are doing with teaching "Force Fetch". Look up Jimmy McMahann with sure shot kennels He lives right out side of Covington. if you train him to do everthing else let a pro teach him Force Fetch. Water Dog is a good book as well. How Old is the pup?
 
I have trained many time with Jimmy McMahann and Scott Greer, they are great trainers, many times you can see one of them on ESPN, "Super Retreiver Series"

many people now consider the "Water Dog" book outdated, much has changed since that book was written
 
I recommend the Sound Begginnings DVD it is pretty good on what to do with the puppy as a puppy. Gives you some solid basics and then you can move onto another program from there. They are right about force fetch don;t move onto that to soon. Basic rule is don't do it until the pup has gotten all its adult teeth in. Just what I have heard?
