BIG Trophy Rock???

gonna buy the reg size here in the next week or so if I cannot order the bigger size.

Period. jmo.....I have been placing Trace Mineral out for years and i can tell you i have never had one Buck or Doe complain about not being served the Trophy Rock.....
Folks no matter what you say or believe....God didnt make Trophy rock any more special than Trace Mineral..........
But spend your money if it doesnt hurt your wallet. You have my blessings.

It might be that I'm just not doin something right, but I bought some 2 yrs ago and the deer aren't useing'em any more than they did the mineral blocks I usually put out. I'll just stick with the cheap stuff.

Trace mineral salt from TSC or the Co-Op. I just pour it on the ground the first time and after that I pour it in the hole the Deer dig. Some people I know use ice cream salt and get the same results. I believe "Salt is Salt" and the only difference is the trace minerals in the red stock salt.

Usually I wind up putting 1 or 2 depending on how much usage the lick gets. If the ussage drops off I will add another bag. I have found that the denser the soil in the lick the less often I have to freshen the lick.

I seem to get better results with the loose salt than I do with a block. I have watched deer walk around in the salt lick (most of mine have water in the bottom of them), get salty mud on their hooves and lick them when they are bedded. Just got to see this one time when the deer bedded close to the salt lick while I was in a stand.

This is why I have always tried to find pockets of heavy red clay for my salt lick locations. Not only is the soil more dense, I believe the iron content of the soil plays a role in attractiveness. Perhaps a chemist could comment on what chemical reaction may be occuring between the high-ferrous soil and salt.

God didnt make Trophy rock any more special than Trace Mineral..........

Actually, God made Trophy Rock (natural salt deposits mined from the ground) but didn't make trace minerals (man-made product). Now does this matter? Who knows, but I try to use as many natural products as possible.

That said, will trace mineral salts work? You bet. But will it last as long as Trophy Rock? The powdered trace mineral, no.

I've used both for a long time and have had better luck on the TR. It is more expensive but the deer destroy the ground where its been and i feel that in 3 or 4 weeks time i get a photo of nearly every buck in the area. I dont see them out in the fields on the farmers salt blocks but they'll be at mine all day...A great product for scouting and finding out just what bucks are around. The more you stay away the more they use it!

I have been using TR for the last three years and we put them in a stump off the ground and they will last a year. We had a lick that we put mineral salt in the ground we put salt in two to three times per year. We started this lick over 25 years ago and it hasn't had any salt put in it in at least 10 years and they still have a huge hole dug out. WIth a TR lasting a year vs. having a couple of bags of mineral salt the price is about the same.

Just to let you all know. Trophy Rock is 97% salt. I can go to the local feed mill any day of the week and buy stock salt 50#'s for $4.99 and Trace mineral salt for $8.99.

Here is conversation from another post about an attempt to get info on "what" is exactly in a Tropy Rock....note the vagueness of the company in "explaining"!


Trophy Rock's just state that they have certain ingredients in them. Not how much (see their website). I have repeatedly e-mailed them asking what and how much is in their product, with NO response. So technically it could be 99.9999999% salt and the other 0.0000001% could be the remaining minerals they list on their website. The website is very vague on how much of the included (naturally occuring) ingredients are in their product. Trophy rocks are in my opinion nothing more than a "flashy" fishing lure made to catch fisherman, not fish.

Keep in mind its the salt(sodium chloride) that are in these mineral licks that draw the deer. The deers body requires a much higher intake of sodium in the hotter spring, summer, and early fall months to help retain the water they take in and keep the body functioning properly. So they must either take in water frequently or have sufficient sodium intake to help retain the water they do take in. The minerals in the licks or blocks are just a by product that they take in with the salt. Without the salt, they will not hardly use them, if at all. The salt is what they crave. So if they are using the TR more than the TS blocks, then it would stand to reason the TR has a higher content of salt than the TS blocks. Right???

I think I will get some TR tommorow and also some red stock salt and put them out about 8 or 10 feet apart and set a camera to watch both at the same time. I will set up new licks for both types.

Good idea Beekeeper. Set up a comparison so you can decide for yourself.

Just for clarification, you're not going to see me post that I think Trophy Rock does anything for deer beyond provide salt, which they like and need, especially in hot weather. A cattle salt block or trace mineral salts do the exact same thing.

I like Trophy Rock simple because it a natural product--basically a portable natural salt lick. Salt blocks and trace mineral salts are man-made. If I can use a natural product over a man-made product, I will.
