I'm a day late in posting, but on Saturday afternoon, I went to one of my cedar thickets I haven't hunted in a while. Needed some deer meat to make more snack sticks. Also needed an easy access spot that was a short walk from the truck, so I could go hang out with my siblings that evening.

I had the 308 with me, and really wanted to hunt an open field, but the fields I had in mind didn't have much green or much deer sign. So I took the Ruger to 30-30 territory and set up under a tree I've killed from before, on an edge between cedars and young timber thicket.

The wind was wrong, I knew that going into it, but also knew that the deer seem to come from a different angle every time, and the cedars make the wind swirl pretty bad. So it's a crap shoot regardless.

Well sure nuff, I saw two does slipping through the cedar shadows what was supposed to be directly downwind. Just after losing sight of the second one, I noticed one big doe staring me down about 25 yards. I raised the rifle slow enough to not be detected as she stood there head bobbing and stomping. She was facing almost straight at me, but at the close range I steadied the crosshair and let her have it...

Blood trail was a little spotty due to the shot angle, but I followed both blood and fresh deep tracks straight to one of their favorite creek crossings. That's as far as she made it...

Still need another doe or two for the freezer and for a HFTH donation. This is the latest I've gone without a donation, only have killed 4 deer so far this year. Next deer goes to the hungry.

Congrats Cat, thanks for sharing!

What caliber gun is the Ruger in the pic? You mention "30-30 territory", is why I ask.

I think according to his post it is a 308.

Gotcha. The way I read it is he had the .308 with him, but opted not to take it because he wanted to hunt some fields. I was thinking you had two calibers in the Ruger rifle.

Congrats I would sure like to get 1. Season has been one disaster after another. But I still got my nose outta the water.
