This pile of deer in from our recent trip to Mississippi. My dad, Papaw, and I went down to my cousins house for some doe management. My papaw and I both killed a buck as well, but that's not the best part of the story.

A couple of years ago I was looking for a deer rifle to buy. A gentlemen I went to church with gave me the rifle in the picture. Its a Ruger M77 Mark II 30-06. He told me he wanted me to have it and enjoy it. And enjoy it I have. The first deer I killed with it was a 70lb doe at 300 yrds. (I actually measured it) I ended up with 4 deer in 3 days.
The man that gave me the gun was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and is now within weeks of passing away. It was awesome to be able to call him on the way home to tell him the story and to thank him again for his generosity.

And now the freezer is full and I got more jerky that one family can eat in a year.

Seriously, he is RIGHT ON!

I use a small rock or golf ball, hang the deer by the head, skin it enough to get the ball under the skin, wrap rope around the ball and over the skin, make the four slits around and up the legs, hook the other end of the rope to truck or winch (best) or 4x4 (6x6) and pull off skin in one easy pull.

After you get good at it it takes about 10 minutes.

You can skin and quarter several deer very fast in cold weather without getting sore fingers.

Great pics and great story. That Ruger is a fine rifle.
