I have a CVA OPtima Elite in .270, but am thinking about getting the Marlin 30 30 out this season for the woods hunting I plan on doing from the tree stand. Anybody else like this gun for woods hunting from a climbing stand?
 
I killed my first deer out of an old climber and my marlin 30-30.I just got a good scope for it,its beens 3 years since she has been out hunting,I hope to draw blood with her this year.

Depends on what tree stand I'm on and the shot distances, or weather at the time. 270 WSM clearcut/ long shots, OS Marlin 444 stainless nasty wet with shots under 150, 30/30 w/scope 200 yd or under, 338-06
250 yds all weather. Maybe even pull out the 303 this year.

I think my 444 would do most everything with a good scope if I had to use just one for most of my likley shots here in TN.

I carry everything from a .243 to a 300 mag to the tree so its up to ure personal preference

you wont have to worry about getting down to track it, unless you need to track the distence it fell straight down. :)
 
If you can get the 30-30 for a rediculous price, and the shots are 100-150 yards, then that would be OK.

I've posted this numerous times, but I absolutely love the Ruger M77 Compact. Mine is a 260 REM, but the 7mm08 would be easier to get ammo if you don't reload.

The rifle is the same overall length as the Winchester 94, but it's actually lighter. Mine is under 7 pounds with sling and 2-7X33 Leupold. Shoots very tight groups, hardly kicks, clobbers the deer. Went 3 for 3 from treestand with it last fall.

Having said all that, I've done very well with my Browning A Bolt .270 from tree stands, too. Here's a pic comparing the two rifles.

Its not the gun its the shot. Shoot what you like and make a good shot with it. Almost any caliber is sufficient enough to kill a whitetail. Place a 222 bullet through the heart...It is on the ground.
 
he asked about the gun not the caliber,,I have tried to hunt from a stand with a 26 inch bbled 25-06 and when they come from behind a short handy rifle is much better and easier to get a clean shot off with,

the Model 7 is my favorite tree stand rifle,,
 
I bought a Wildwest Happy Trigger for my Marlin which should reduce the trigger pull to about three pounds and remove any creep.
 
i think i've shot everything out there, if i could only own one it would have to be my 300 win.mag. yeah the thing is long but gets the job done no matter what you put in front of it!
 
It depends on where I am hunting. If it is the edge of a field I take my 06 but I also hunt a young pine thicket that has a nice pond in the very middle of it with a 4 wheeler trail cut to the pond. When I hunt this stand I take my 30 30 it is small easy to manuver and the furthest shot is mabby 50 yards and I have never had to track a deer shot with the 30 30 more than about 50 yards it really hammers them.
 
I hunt mature bucks over scrape lines pretty much exclusively. Most of the time I am hunting extremely thick cover, lots of brush and cedars. The rig I put together for this is a kimber model 84 classic in 7mmo8. Weights about 5 and a half pounds naked. I put a 10 oz leupold vx3 -2.5-8x36 scope on it. Total rig is short, light and accurate. I shoot heavier bullets in it 150+. I would stay away from long, heavy and single shot guns. Several of the bucks I have killed in this setting were travelin fast or chasing does and a single shot is less than optimal. Browning makes a micro medallion a nd the rem model 7 are also good choices. You can them in all the standard short action chambers as well. 243, 260, 7mm08 or 308.
