Best Trail Camera

Would like to hear some names of most dependable trail cameras. I want around 10 mega pixels and IR. Any personal experiences with what you suggest would be really great.
Its going to be a Christmas present for my son.

Steer clear of the cheap brands, like WGI, Primos, etc. Right now, the Bushnells, Coverts, and top-of-the-line Moultries (like 990i) are producing the best results with the least complaints.

And go with black-flash instead of IR.

I second the Moultrie 880. Just tested mine, great pictures, easy to use, good battery life. Also have a 990 but I have not put it out yet.

I tried a $70 camera last year on clearance. Waste of money. Would not trigger reliably 10 feet away.

Going into my stand in KY sat morning I walked past my 880 in the dark. I walked as fast as I could and it still took 3 pictures.

We have had some "sticky Fingered trespassers", so I am reluctant to put a $200 camera out there. We have had the inexpensive ones, trigger speed seemed to be the biggest problem, and you're lucky to get 2 seasons out of them. It's a gamble whatever you put out.

The new moultries have a passcode you set up and a place to put a lock so they can't open the camera. Without the passcode you cannot get into the camera function...see pics etc...

On private property, the vast majority of cameras that are stolen, are stolen not for selling or getting the pictures, but to hide the evidence of the thief's trespassing.

I have the new Covert and it will text you its location. Between that and the locks and passwords, not to mention the crooks picture will be sent to your phone. Technology is going to make thefts much more difficult in the future.

The email/texting cameras are definitely the wave of the future. Personally, I don't use them, but they are becoming very popular and their pricing is coming down.

For sure, at less than $300 they are cheaper than many other cameras that don't have the phone capabilities.

I agree. Had my memory card stolen so I put a lock on the camera... Guess they came back and realized they couldn't take the card so they cut the straps.

And that's why I DON'T lock the card into the camera. I would rather a trespasser steal a $8 memory card than a $200 camera.
